DLC and downloadable games got big in the 2010s after the big consoles of the time finally figured out online distribution. The indie scene was popping off on PS3 and Xbox 360 with games likeCastle Crashers,Limbo,Journey, and so many others. Halloween was also celebrated around this time with one-off campaigns for a variety of experiences.

To this dayRed Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmarehas to be the biggest example of this. It took the western setting of the original game and turned it into a game about shooting zombies and riding around on horses of the apocalypse. It was silly, over the top, and a good time all around. WhatXbox Series X/Sgames from this year should get the same treatment?

Dead Spacewas one of two big horror games that got a remake in 2023. The other isResident Evil 4and they both reviewed well. The story inDead Spacehas a definitive ending and setting before the next game picks up. So, it’s hard to see the developers add anything Halloween-related to it.

That doesn’t mean the content has to be taken as canon though and they could go wild. Since the game takes in space, it would be funny if Isaac crashed into the ship from Jason X and fought Jason Voorhees.

7Exoprimal

Exoprimalwas one of the weirdest games of the year which is saying a lot. The game takes place in the future where it’s normal that dinosaurs run around. It’s not just that they are alive, dinosaurs shower into the world like rainstorms and there is even a weather forecast for expected dinosaur incidents.

Players get a series of mech suits that they can use to slay an endless supply of dinosaurs during these incursions. There’s not really a dinosaur that would fit into the Halloween category, but Capcom could do a fun promotionwithJurassic Parkand add some costumes along with iconic dinosaurs like the T-Rex.

6Hi-Fi Rush

Hi-Fi Rushwas a surprise because it was announced and shadow-dropped on the same day on Xbox Game Pass. It was from a highly acclaimed studio too, Tango Gameworks, who previously madeThe Evil Withingames. Those games are definitely great to play during Halloween as survival horror shooters.

Hi-Fi Rushis quite the opposite experience with its rhythm-based action and colorful setting. It’s still possible to get Halloween content in the game though. Maybe they could add remixes of themes from classic horror movieslike literalHalloweento fight to.

5Starfield

Starfieldis going to be a game that people are still going to be playing a year from now. The main story may be short, but the randomly generated content is infinite. Eventually, it will get DLC too but a Halloween update could add some fun in the meantime.

What about a planet that celebrates Halloween as some sort of cult? There could be people dressed up like werewolves or vampires as an homage to other Bethesda games likeThe Elder Scrolls. There are so many planets to explore in the game that there could be a planet like this right now, waiting to be discovered.

4Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivormight sound like a weird game to add Halloween content too. The overallStar Warsuniversehasn’t necessarily shown Halloween to be a thing. They do, however, celebrate Life Day which is a Christmas equivalent.

The game wouldn’t necessarily have to do a lot to celebrate the spooky holiday. Give Cal and his companions some fun costumes from across the multiverse ofStar Warscontent. For example, Merrin is basically a space witch, so giving her a traditional robe and black hat would be entertaining.

3The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

There has been a recent trend in gaming to turn classic horror movies into modern video games.Friday the 13thkicked things off in 2017, then there wasEvil Deadin 2022, and nowThe Texas Chainsaw Massacreis here. Like the other two examples,The Texas Chainsaw Massacreis a multiplayer game.

Players can choose to be part of the maniac family of murderers including Leatherface or they can escape the horror as survivors. A fun bit of Halloween content could add other horror icons into the mix like Michael Myers from Halloween or Jason Voorhees fromFriday the 13th.

2Wild Hearts

Wild Heartswas a collaboration between EA and Omega Force and is best known for developing the variousDynasty Warriorsgames.Wild Heartsplays nothing like those and is insteadaMonster Hunterclone with a few twists.

For example, players could build contraptions to aid them in battle like springs to jump higher or walls to stun bosses. For Halloween content, the developers could create a new monster as part of a limited-time event. The monster materials could lead to crafting Halloween Halloween-adjacent armor.

1Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Wo Long: Fallen Dynastyjust got a recent collaboration withLies of P, the latest Soulslike to hit the scene. Both games try to do something a bit different for the genre. For example, inWo Long, players could take two AI-controlled companions into battle.

Co-op with friends was still an option but it was refreshing to see a developer add a way for non-online players to get an upper hand in battle too. A Halloween update could add other Team Ninja characters to the game for a limited time like Ryu fromNinja Gaidenor Ayane fromDead or Alive. Costumes could also be a fun way to celebrate Halloween.
