Every video game player has come across this problem before: It does not matter how much they are enjoying a game, a certain enemy pops up and the experience is made less fun as a result. This may be because the enemy is difficult to take down or relentless in its pursuit. Either way, players hate running into these types of enemies.

It has been a trope for a long time for game developers to try and add a curveball into their projects. Sadly, these curveballs aren’t always welcome, and some even bring a level of infamy to their names. Not allthese enemiesare from open-world games, though, and some show up more than players may think.

TheHalogames made the impression on players that every problem could be solved with a hail of bullets. Unfortunately, players have to abandon that strategy when they first encounter the Hunters. These largemembers of the Covenantoften travel in pairs and carry huge arm cannons.

A single blast from a Hunter or having one run into Master Chief is enough to take out the player in one hit. As such, players must come tofight these enemieswith a plan in mind, or at least with a lot of patience. Almost all bullets bounce off a Hunter’s armor, and it is likely that players will have to repeat a checkpoint if they are not expecting to see these brutes in a level.

The wasteland inFalloutis no place for the average citizen to roam alone. The world is full of mutated creatures and raiders looking for a target. However, no enemy in this place is more fearsome than the Deathclaw.

These huge beasts wander the wasteland and are not afraid to attack players on sight. They are fast, strong, and will not quit chasing the player until one of the combatants is dead. Encountering one of these while traveling to an objective can really make a mission increase in difficulty.

Mind Flayer in Baldur’s Gate

A mind flayer is an arrogant creature of immense psychic power. They haunt the forgotten realms ofBaldur’s Gate 3, and many parties cannot face these beasts with just combat. It is always nice to know if a mind flayer encounter is coming up, but players will be aware of their presence long before the fight begins.

Mind flayers fight exclusively with psionic attacks. This means that they will have impressive range on a player wherever they choose to attack from. What’s more, these attacks can stun, confuse, or charm their target, so the player’s party will usually walk away with an affliction even if they win the fight. The best option is just to run, as a mind flayer has too many resistances to count, including slashing damage.

It was a huge deal when Bethesda revealed that dragons would be the main enemy inSkyrim. However, the dragons in the open world are not as fun to engage with as the ones in the main story.

Many players soon get tired of exploring Skyrim or performing a quest, only for the battle music to start anda dragon to swoop down and attack. Fighting dragons is fun, but not so much when there is something else in the game that needs attention. Plus, these beasts take a while to take down for players using anything other than a ranged character build.

Even the name, Fingercreeper, is enough to give players pause when thinking about these creatures. They show up all over the place inElden Ringand behave just like a spider in the shape of a human hand with too many fingers.

However, the issue with these beastsisn’t their appearance but their combat tactics. A Fingercreeper will remain completely motionless, only leaping out at a player once they walk past without noticing it. This means that many players aren’t aware that they’re going to encounter this enemy until it’s too late.

It is recommended that players know what they are doing before they enter a battle against them.

The Rancor is brutally strong with a lot of health. That is why players must take advantage of how slow the beast is. It also helps to dual-wield a lightsaber when trying to take out a Rancor.

SinceHadesis a roguelike video game,the types of enemies a player can encounter in the next room are entirely random. That means players will survey their surroundings as they progress and either breathe a sigh of relief or get immediately frustrated.

One enemy inHadesthat is sure to cause players some frustration is the burn-flinger. These scuttling demons have two attacks to choose from. A fastball that will almost always hit the player, or a curveball that follows the player around the room as they attempt to deal with the other enemies. Either attack is hard to deal with, and that is why Burn-Flingers are usually the first enemies players choose to kill in a room.

The Berserker inGears of Warmay be blind, but that doesn’t make them any less deadly. Any game in theGears of War franchise will normally only feature a berserker as a mini-boss, and for good reason.

With its keen sense of hearing, a berserker will brutally charge at the player as soon as it is aware of their presence. It only takes a single hit from one of these enemies to take out the protagonist, so a mistimed dodge or taking too long to attack the creature could end up in a very quick game over.
