Last November,God of War: Ragnaroklaunched on PS5 and PS4 and was an immediate hit with both gamers and critics alike. Many aspects of its design were applauded, with specific praise being directed at its story and the development of many of its characters. The core father and son duo in particular,Kratos and Atreus, were seen as being given complete arcs that helped wrap up many of the loose threads from 2018’sGod of Warwhile also simultaneously setting things up for future installments.

Another major PlayStation franchise,Uncharted, concluded a lot of major character arcs while establishing the seeds for later chapters in the final moments of 2016’sUncharted 4: A Thief’s End. During the closing moments of said title, the plot flashes forward several years after the climax to reveal that Nathan and Elena have retired from their adventuring to settle down and have a daughter named Cassie. As much as Nathan seems to want to keep his old life in the past, the love for exploring and a curious nature seems to run in Cassie’s blood, something which should be explored in anotherUnchartedgame.

God of War: Ragnarok - Learning to Let Go

Arecurring theme inGod of War: Ragnarokis that of learning to let go and move on. Both Kratos and Atreus have their own personal tribulations throughout the journey, but a deeper personal conflict is shared between them as well. Kratos is unwilling to accept that his son is growing into a man and will soon leave to discover the world on his own. Meanwhile, Atreus struggles to accept his father’s tough exterior and stubborn attitude, finding it difficult to converse and confide in him about anything on his mind.

Over the course of the journey, and after numerous difficult obstacles to overcome both individually and together, Kratos and Atreus do eventually see eye to eye. They both accept each other and that they need to carve their own paths, providingGod of War’s Kratosan emotionally satisfying ending after his years of hardship, and giving Atreus a platform from which to become the face of the franchise, should the developers choose. This kind of development is satisfying to see and serves as a perfect template for a ‘passing the torch’ storyline, as one generation leads into another.

naughty dog sequel rumor character shift

The Next Uncharted - Father and Daughter

DespiteNaughty Dog being busy withThe Last of Usin recent years, rumors continue to persist of newUnchartedgames being on the horizon. Considering the popularity of the series and how iconic it is to the PlayStation brand, a brand-new chapter in the globe-trotting adventure series seems inevitable. As mentioned earlier,Uncharted 4: A Thief’s Endspends its final moments setting up Cassie, establishing her as an intelligent, adventurous individual, following in the footsteps of her father Nathan.

It seems unlikely for Naughty Dog to have introduced a compelling new character without some sort of plan for where to take her next. Many fans are convinced that anewUnchartedwas teased during a PS5 ad, with a brief glimpse at a female explorer inside a dark cave, a woman likely to be Cassie Drake. The plot could revolve around her having grown up and decided to pick up where Nathan left off.

This could spark tension between her and Nate, as he remembers the numerous close calls he had duringtheUnchartedseriesas a treasure hunting explorer. However, taking a card from Kratos' books, Nathan will have to learn to let Cassie grow into her own person and realize these things for herself. Similarly to Atreus, she can only be shown and guided on the path, but its up to her to make the choices for herself whenever a newUnchartedends up rolling onto the PlayStation 5 in the years ahead.
