Adam Sandler paid a touching tribute to his former Saturday Night alum and friend Chris Farley when sang a song about their friendship on his comedy specialAdam Sandler: 100% Fresh. Because Sandler values his friendship with Farley, singing such a song is not easy for the comedian.

Sandler, who has established himself as a talented musician on top of his talents as a comedian, admitted that singing about his friend, who tragically died 25 years ago from a drug overdose, makes him emotional when he performs it.

While being interviewed by Josh Horowitz on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, Sandler admitted how hard it was for him to sing about Farley when he first started. “The first few times we played that song, I would tear up, and I couldn’t really sing it well because I’d get so emotional, and then I felt it and was able to get it out there,” Sandler said. “It’s weird, but when that song starts, I go, ‘Oh f*** alright, don’t cry and don’t do that still. I’ve sang it maybe a hundred times already, but it rocks me.” Sandler then explained why singing such a song devastates him. “I think it’s because we show video of Chris, and I see his face, and I remember his dad, and I remember I’m friends with his brothers and his mom and everybody, and they still miss him a lot,” Sandler said. “So, yeah, it gets me.”

Farley and Sandler got their big breaks in Hollywood when they spent five years together on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1995, where they performed their comedic talents. Farley was known more for his physical comedy, while Sandler’s fortewas his musical talents. Both would then evolve from SNL to movie stars following their departures in 1995. Both were in movies together, although they never technically starred in one as a duo. Farley mainly starred beside SNL alum David Spade in his movies. A fair amount of Sandler’s movies featured former SNL castmates, though the only Sandler movie Farley ever appeared in wasBilly Madison.

Sandler’s admission makes it clear how much Farley’s tragic passing has affected him as a person, even to this day. The most prominent members of SNL from those days shared a well-documented rapport with one another when they worked together on the show. In fact, Sandler wrote the script for the movieGrown Upsduring the 90s with the intention of having Farley star in the role that would later go to Kevin James in 2010. It makes sense too since Sandler, Farley, Spade,Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider all grew to prominence while working together.

Their friendship definitely showed when Sandler and Farley acted together in skits. Seriously, try to find any SNL skit with Farley and Sandler together that doesn’t have Sandler trying his best not to crack up at Farley’s antics. It’s impossible. It’s because those two enjoyed working together that Farley enjoyed making his friend break. And it’s why Sandler tries topay tribute to his friendno matter how hard it is for him.
