Summary

InGod of War Ragnarok, Kratos takes center stage as he navigates myths and prophecies while traversing the often thorny path of parenthood. He is forced to share the spotlight with a host of other characters who join him in combat, including his son. This is great for players, as it gives them a new approach to combat, ensuring enemy encounters never grow stale.

Though having many playable companions may have been a good move forGod of War Ragnarok, it may not be the best strategy for future games. If a sequel decides to focus on Atreus, there may be less of a focus on having a multitude of companions and more of a focus on making Angrboda the best companion possible. This can be done by giving her combat abilities greater depth.

The Playable Companions of God of War Ragnarok

God of War(2018) switched things up by giving Kratos a sidekick in the form of his son, Atreus. During battles, pressing the square button on PlayStation controllers gives players the chance to control Atreus’s bow and arrow. This comes in handy during testing battles, and Atreus proves himself to be a useful addition to combat.

God of War Ragnarokkicks things up a notch by introducing even more companions for players to experiment with. Atreus splits from Kratos for large chunks of the game, giving both parties a chance to explore with other companions. Thelist of playable companions inGod of War Ragnarokincludes:

There are other companions that join Kratos and Atreus’s adventure, but they aren’t controllable during combat. This includes Thor, Tyr, and Heimdall. Having a variety of playable characters helped to makeGod of War Ragnaroka special title, butaRagnaroksequel focused on Atreusmay go a different direction.

An Atreus-Focused God of War Sequel Could Place Greater Emphasis on Angrboda

InGod of War Ragnarokit is made apparent thatAtreus and Angrbodamake a good team. When they’re not taking down monsters together, they can be found playfully racing each other. Their movesets complement each other, and Angrboda leaves enemies stunned for long enough for Atreus to deliver the killer blow.

In a futureGod of Wargame starring Atreus, the focus should be on Angrboda and Atreus’s companionship. This means there will be fewer opportunities for other companions to be controlled during combat, but it does give plenty of opportunity forAngrboda’s moveset and combat abilitiesto be expanded upon. This can be done by giving her more weapons and a wider range of abilities during combat.

The Future of God of War Could Be Great News for Angrboda

It is not known yet whether the nextGod of Wargame will keep the existing formula withKratos and Atreus, or if Kratos will pass the baton to Atreus and make him the main focus. Either option is exciting and comes with many possibilities. If Atreus becomes the main protagonist, players may see fewer playable companions, but this doesn’t mean this aspect of gameplay will be diminished, as Angrboda still has a lot that could be improved about her in terms of combat abilities.
