Summary

After a few successive failures, theBattlefieldfranchise finds itself teetering on a knife’s edge. If the nextBattlefieldentry fails once again, it could spell trouble for a two-decade-old shooter franchise. But if the nextBattlefieldentry ends up being great, it could shoot the franchise back into the spotlight in a way that the series hasn’t experienced since the launch ofBattlefield 1back in 2016.

Naturally, there’s a lot of pressure on the shoulders ofthe nextBattlefieldgame, and from the sounds of some recent reports, EA is starting to feel that pressure. There are a total of four video game studios currently working on the nextBattlefieldentry, and though all are undoubtedly going to be infusing their own DNA into the project, they shouldn’t be afraid to take a look back at the series to combine some of the best features from past entries - features likeBattlefield 4’s Levolution andBattlefield 2042’s dynamic weather effects.

Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 2042 Could Pave the Way for a Bold New Feature

Battlefield 4’s Levolutions Were a Natural Progression for the Series

Destruction physics have been a part ofBattlefield’s DNA sinceBattlefield: Bad Company’s releaseall the way back in 2008. Creatively named Destruction 1.0, this innovative Frostbite Engine feature delivered a destruction system that had never really been seen before in gaming, allowing players to destroy specific parts of a building or environment.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2improved upon this system greatly, with its Destruction 2.0 physics system allowing players to bring down entire buildings by damaging their supports enough.Battlefield 3’s Destruction 3.0 systemadded a few new features of its own, including the ability to damage structures and pieces of the environment with smaller firearms as well, and a persistent rubble system that kept the effects of a demolition around for the match’s entirety.

Battlefield 2042 2

In 2013,the Frostbite Engine’s state-of-the-art destruction would gain its final form, withBattlefield 4boasting the Levolution system. Here, players were able to bring down entire skyscrapers, flood entire maps, and destroy vital structures such as bridges, all of which would drastically change their respective environments. Players would need to adapt to these Levolution mechanics during the course of a match, using alternate routes to reach objectives, and finding new vantage points.

Battlefield 2042’s Weather Effects Tried Something New

ThoughBattlefield 2042is more than worthy of its dismal critical reception, it isn’t completely void of intriguing features. In fact,Battlefield 2042’s dynamic weather systems were actually quite interesting, albeit not executed too well in the final product. On any map inBattlefield 2042, there’s a chance that a tornado could appear, wreaking havoc on the environment below and pulling any nearby players up into the air. A sandstorm can also appear on the map Hourglass, blinding players for a short duration. Though these weather effects weren’t explored nearly enough, they’re still an interesting feature, and one worth revisiting infutureBattlefieldgames.

Combining Levolution with Weather Effects Could Be Huge for the Next Battlefield

If the nextBattlefieldcould combineBattlefield 4’s Levolution systemwithBattlefield 2042’s dynamic weather effects, then it could pave the way for one of the most enthralling mechanics in gaming. Players could be swept up in some kind of large-scale storm or earthquake, one that doesn’t just affect players, but drastically impacts the environment as well, destroying buildings, blocking pathways, and generally changing the layout of the map in unpredictable ways. Players would then have to adjust their strategies based on the randomized layout, making each match feel completely unique.
