After thedisappearance of his brother, the unnamed protagonist is left with the task of taking care of his brother’s possessions after all hope of finding him alive has been lost. However, after spending a night in his brother’s house, the protagonist finds himself haunted by strange noises and eventually awakens in the attic with no recollection of how he got there. Driven mad by the loss of his brother, the walls plagued with voices, and being trapped in the desolate attic, the unnamed protagonist finally takes it upon himself to find a way out and find the truth behind his brother’s disappearance.

Goliath The Soothsayerthen tasks the player with finding their way out of each room, scanning each section for clues. With alternate endings,Goliath The Soothsayergives the player the ultimate choice: give into their morbid curiosity for the sake of a thrill or finally put an end to the madness, once and for all.

7Escape The Boogeyman

Escape The Boogeymanis a short horror experience (now unfortunately unavailable to play) where the player is dropped into the middle of the madness right from the beginning with one simple objective: to (as the title implies) escapethe terrifying boogeyman. The player must use the limited tools and resources to navigate their way through the dark halls before their flashlight dies, and the boogeyman comes to take its prey.

The dilapidated house the player must escape from is intentionally filled with confusing architecture, making the player scramble through hallways with identical doorways to amp up the fear factor.

6Exmortis (Series)

TheExmortisseries is anarrative-heavy point-and-clickadventure horror game where the player mysteriously wakes up in the middle of the forest and takes refuge from the freezing cold in a nearby house. As the player explores the house they discover many text documents that begin to fill in the blanks and explain more about the mysterious house and its disturbing dark past.

TheExmortisseries had little to work with, but despite its simplicity, still did a great job at creating haunting environments, an immersive story, and delivering some effective scares.

5Darkness (Series)

All three installments of theDarknessseries are very simple-looking games. Most of its characters and environments are made in the style of MS Paint (or something similar). At first glance, most modern-day players may scoff at the idea of getting a genuinely scary experience from a game that looks so incredibly outdated. However, it’s in theDarkness' surprisingly complex gameplay style that all the scares are truly found.

TheDarknessfollows a young girl who ispursued by a deadly ghost. The player must navigate their way out of their environment to safety by solving puzzles and evading the ghost using their “panic” button. TheDarkness, despite its simplistic style, utilized an inventory system, intricate puzzles, and even a hiding mechanic whenever the killer ghost came nearby.

4Gretel And Hansel (1 & 2)

Based on thefamous Brothers Grimm taleof a similar name,Gretel And Hanselis a beautifully executed horror game that was released in two parts, back in 2009 and 2010. The game is stylized as a storybook (as expected), yet despite its gorgeous watercolor aesthetic, still manages to create terrifying scenes and creatures in its own beautiful fairytale world.

Gretel And Hanselis a simple yet intriguing point-and-click horror flash game. The player takes control of a terrified Gretel as she finds out her parents plan to deal with their struggling food supply by kicking Gretel and her brother out into the dangerous woods. The pair must find a way to safely escape both their parents and the dangers of the woods.

The House 1and2are some of the best games to pick up for a short yet engaging horror experience.The Houseis a point-and-click horror flash game that follows a fairly basic formula but still somehow manages to deliver great scares. The player navigates througheach part of the mysterious houseand must search for clues to discover how each member of the family that once lived there met their untimely fate.

The House 2follows a similar formula, but this time focuses on a family adopting a mysterious young girl who ends up bringing a suffocating darkness to the household, ending in all their deaths. TheHouse 1and2both may be a bit predictable at times when put up to current-day gaming standards (as they were released back in 2005 and 2010), but it remains a classic that holds up surprisingly well!

Sadly,Hotel 626is a lost relic of its time, as it was released back in 2008 but has been inactive since 2011 and is no longer available to play.Hotel 626was a flash game but utilized live-action FMV (full-motion video) as well as 3D-rendered scenes and gameplay. Only available to play from 6 PM to 6 AM,Hotel 626ensured that players had a dark and somber atmosphere to create a fully immersive experience.

The player had the singular goal ofsafely escaping Hotel 626with their life and making it through each dangerous (and terrifying) task to accomplish that near-impossible goal.
