Borderlands 3stirred up quite a bit of controversy at release, not only due to bugs and performance problems, but because of a major plot point in the game. Thedeath of a former playable charactercame as a shock to many, though the game didn’t dwell as much on it as it might have, as has now been revealed by a deleted scene.
The upcomingBorderlands 3Director’s Cut DLC will add some new content to the game that didn’t make it to the original version. While much of the content is intended to add some additional challenges and collectibles to the game, there will also be some cut scenes demonstrated for the first time, and Gearbox has now released a teaser for one of them.WARNING: Major spoilers forBorderlands 3follow.
AsBorderlands 3players know, the death of Maya, a playable protagonist fromBorderlands 2, came as a massive shock. While her death helped to propel the plot, many were distraught at her loss, and the reception of Ava as her ‘replacement’ of sorts wasn’t well received by many players. Ava was widely chided as being useless and irritating, which made the loss of Maya, a well-liked character, even worse. Part of the reason behind thedistaste for Avawas due to her involvement in Maya’s loss, but a new animatic is shedding some light on how hard it hit her to lose her mentor.
The animatic, a moving 2D storyboard with voice acting applied to it, was shared by theBorderlands 3Twitter account as a teaser for the upcoming DLC. It takes place just as the team arrives back onSanctuary 3, still reeling from the loss. The extended scene reveals just how badly Ava has been impacted by the loss of Maya, and her sense of powerlessness in anyone being able to do anything to prevent it. The scene also gives characters like Lilith and Ellie an opportunity to react to the discovery of her loss, and gives Ava a response other than being angry.
Of course, it remains to be seen if theBorderlands 3Director’s Cut DLC can add enough to the game to fullyredeem Ava. Many players came away from the game with mixed feelings, to put it lightly, regarding Ava’s new role as the leader of the Crimson Raiders. Fans will have to wait and see if it can add enough to her character development to convince them that she deserves the position and, perhaps, a little less flack for her shortcomings.
Borderlands 3is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Director’s Cut DLC will release on April 8.
