Call of Duty: Warzonehas received a substantial update that adds a ton of new features, including a slew of new weapons for the Gulag. Players won’t just be restricted to a small subset of weapons when fighting for their lives inWarzoneany longer.

InCall of Duty: Warzone, dead players are sent to theGulagand pitted against one another pulse-pounding close-quarters gunfights to earn the right to respawn. Typically, players in the Gulag only get access to a handful ofCall of Duty: Warzone’s many different weapon types. Shotguns and pistols make for intense duels, but the Gulag firefights have been sorely lacking in variety since the game launched. Veteran players have fallen into a rhythm and know exactly what plays to run when given a certain weapon. That all changes with today’s update.

Now, new weapon classes will be given to prisoners doing battle in the Gulag. Assault rifles and SMGs are now included in the weapon pool, spicing up shootouts and allowing for a wider variety of engagements within the prison. Among the assault rifles added are the AK-47, M13, and Kilo 141, which are all favorites amongModern WarfareandWarzoneplayers. Many popular SMGs have made it into the Gulag as well, and prisoners will start to see the likes of the Striker 45 and other submachine guns in their Gulag loadouts after installing the update.

The Gulag layout itself has not changed, but the inclusion of these new weapons adds another layer of strategy onto the stressful situation of being stuck in the Gulag. The small selection of shotguns and pistols forced players to rush their enemies and get in close for an easy kill, but the addition ofassault rifles and submachine gunswill dramatically change things up. Now, engagements can happen from much longer distances, and players can hold angles and wait for their opponent to make the wrong move.

The Gulag is one ofCall of Duty: Warzone’s most unique features and it definitely sets the game apart from the many otherfree-to-play battle royale gamesout there. While the Gulag is a novel concept, the novelty starts to wear thin for those that playWarzoneoften mostly because of the restricted loadouts provided during Gulag duels. Now, things will hopefully be much more exciting, and players that prefer assault rifles or submachine guns over shotguns and pistols will have a fair shot at emerging victorious. Some weapon types, like sniper rifles and marksman rifles, are still missing from the Gulag, but this infusion of new weapon types is sure to keep the Gulag feeling fresh for the foreseeable future.

Call of Duty: Warzoneis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
