Summary

A concept trailer for Insomniac’s canceledSpider-Manmultiplayer game has just leaked online, giving fans a glimpse into what the ambitious project could have been like. Insomniac’s series of open-worldSpider-Mangames have earned critical acclaim from fans of Marvel’s legendary web slinger, starting with the successfulMarvel’s Spider-Manback in 2018. A spin-off was released in 2020 inSpider-Man: Miles Morales, which saw the titular teenage hero come into his own as a crime-fighter. Both he and Peter Parker returned as playable characters inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2last year, facing off against deadly villains like Venom and Kraven the Hunter while struggling with their own personal demons.

Not too long after the launch ofMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac fell victim to a massive data breach that exposed some of the developer’s plans for its growing Marvel gaming universe. In addition togames featuring Venom, Wolverine, and the X-Men, this leak included a multiplayerSpider-Mangame that was supposedly in the works at Insomniac over the past couple of years. Tentatively titledSpider-Man: The Great Web, this open-world title would feature multiple Spider-heroes from across the Marvel multiverse fighting crime and battling supervillains in New York City. Sadly, this game was reportedly canceled by Insomniac a long time before the leak brought it to light.

Now fans can see for themselves whatSpider-Man: The Great Webcould have been like, as aconcept trailer was recently leaked onlineand shared by people like Reddit user okangel12345 on r/insomniacleaks. Narrated by Peter Parker voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, this brief trailer forthe canceledSpider-Mangameshows various Spider-heroes emerging from portals and battling villains like Doc Ock and Venom across different sections of the multiverse. Most of the characters shown appear to be made with pre-existing assets from the previousSpider-Mangames, save for a playable Spider-Gwen that seems to have been made from scratch.

Insomniac’s Canceled Spider-Man Game Would Have Explored The Multiverse

It still isn’t clear ifSpider-Man: The Great Webwas meant to be released before or afterMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, though the presence of Venom and Peter’s black Symbiote costume seems to suggest the latter. The same Insomniac data breach that revealedThe Great Webalso mentioned a supposedonline multiplayer mode forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2that could launch sometime this year, hinting that Insomniac might revisit some of the ideas shown in this recently leaked trailer even ifThe Great Webitself was scrapped.

All of the information included inDecember’s massive Insomniac data breachis subject to change and should be taken with a grain of salt, but this recently leaked concept trailer forSpider-Man: The Great Webseems to all but confirm that Insomniac was indeed working on the multiplayer superhero title before eventually canceling it. Judging from the trailer itself, Insomniac’sSpider-Manmultiplayer gamelooked like an intriguing idea, but there’s no true way of knowing how it would have fared with players had it been released.
