Summary

The 2.0 update forCyberpunk 2077removed one heavily memed detail from the game, a poorly edited image, as revealed by some early player impressions of the patch. The much-anticipated2.0 version ofCyberpunk 2077was releasedon September 21.

Warning! Spoilers for the end of River Ward’s side quest in Cyberpunk 2077 ahead. While the game’s 2020 launch was mired in technical issues, one of its most memed aspects wasn’t actually a result of a bug, but an oversight in the form of a badly edited image. V received the pic in question following the conclusion ofThe Hunt side quest inCyberpunk 2077from Joss Kutcher, River Ward’s sister. The image came with a message thanking the protagonist for finding Kutcher’s son, Randy, but that heartfelt message fell flat due to how clearly fake the attached picture was.

And while few fans expected CD Projekt Red to ever get around to replacing that leftover placeholder, that’s precisely what the studio ended up doing, having swapped the immersion-breaking picture with a much better composite. Theofficial patch notes for theCyberpunk 2077update 2.0make no mention of the move, indicating that the latest version of the game contains even more improvements than what its substantial changelog suggests.

Hundreds of fans have already taken to social media to praise CDPR for replacing what some were describing as a “cursed” picture of Randy, thanking the developer for taking the time to iron out even the tiniest issues of this sort. And while that sentiment appears to be prevalent among the players aware of the change, some have still expressed ambivalent feelings about the replacement, saying that they’ll miss the unintended comic relief that the heavily memed picture provided on each playthrough.

CDPR alsoremoved an Elon Musk lookalike fromCyberpunk 2077as part of the 2.0 update, which was another minor tweak that eluded the new patch notes, but not the watchful eyes of the fandom. Ultimately, both changes are fairly inconsequential additions to the game, at least relative to the sheer size of the 2.0 update, which revamps enough aspects ofCyberpunk 2077to deliver a radically different gameplay experience. Leading that latest list of changes is a comprehensive police system overhaul that stops the NCPD from spawning out of thin air in favor of delivering more realistic patrols and officer reactions to crimes. The patch also introduces non-scripted vehicle combat and a redesigned perk system, among many other additions.

The 2.0 update forCyberpunk 2077is largely intended as a prelude to Phantom Liberty, the RPG’s first and only expansion starring Idris Elba. The $29.99 DLC is scheduled to be released for the current-generation consoles and PC on September 26.

Cyberpunk 2077is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, while its 2.0 update is exclusive to PC and current-gen consoles.
