The launch ofLightfalland Season of Defiance has seen Bungie bring plenty of changes toDestiny 2’s gameplay and quality of life experience, and if a new leak turns out correct, the studio isn’t slowing down as the leveling system looks to get a refresh in Season of the Deep.Guardian Ranksand buildcrafting have been two of the centerpiece changes the latest expansion brought to the game, with other additions such as in-game LFG set to debut later in 2023. However, a long-standing player request to Bungie has been a change to the current gear-driven leveling system, and this leak hints Bungie is finally answering this request.

Season of the Deep is the next planned season forDestiny 2, picking up after the events ofLightfalland Season of Defiance as guardians continue their war against The Witness' forces. As of this writing, little is known about what the season will entail though there have been hints in the game suggesting players may be returning to Titan to continue this battle. The only information Bungie has shared about the season is the weapon refresh coming to Vanguard, Crucible, Gambit, Trials, and Iron Banner, giving players time to grind for the weapons slated to be removed from these activities to make room for the new additions.

On the leveling side, previous leaks had hinted Bungie planned anoverhaul toDestiny 2’s leveling systemto get away from the current system which relies on the gear grind. The latest leak suggests players will be grinding “Power levels,” which can be earned from completing challenges and earning XP. Players would earn one level every 250,000 XP while completing weekly and seasonal challenges would reward one to three levels depending on difficulty.

The suggested change lends some credence to a previous leak about Season of the Deep which also hinted at a change to the current leveling system. It appears the idea behind this change would be to give players greater freedom when it comes to the gear they use, as the current power level system requires grinding for higher-level gear in order to tackle higher-difficulty activities such as raids andGrandmaster Nightfalls. However, Bungie has not confirmed if any of the suggested changes are true and likely won’t speak on them until closer to Season of the Deep’s start date of July 22, 2025.

If the leak proves to be true, though, it would effectively end weapon sunsetting and allow players to pull beloved classics out of their collections or vaults as they will be usable again. Two such weapons which could reemerge areThe Mountaintopand Recluse, the one-two combo which dominatedDestiny 2in the months followingForsaken’s release. On the other hand, these two weapons and many others were sunset due to issues with power creep, a problem a new power level system could reintroduce unless Bungie tweaked the weapons to compensate for the level change.

Destiny 2is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
