Techland’sDying Light 2is rapidly approaching its long-awaited release date. With just two weeks beforeDying Light 2arrives, developer and publisher Techland is starting to share important release information with prospective buyers. That includes the file size ofDying Light 2across its supported platforms. Within this information,Dying Lightfans discovered an odd discrepancy. Namely,Dying Light 2’s file size is dramatically different between platforms with no apparent justification or explanation.

The key difference comes between the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which sees the files size double between the two. The PS5 version ofDying Light 2measures 32.5GB, a rather efficient size for a game as large asDying Light 2at up to 4K will be. The Xbox Series X version ofDying Light 2comes in at a much more substantial 72GB. While very large, this number is in line withCyberpunk 2077. In other words, it’s about what might be expected from such a large game.

No explanation is provided by Techland for the significantly smaller file size on PS5. Even thePC version ofDying Light 2is substantially larger than the PS5’s file size at 60GB, which is still significantly less than the Xbox file size. As if the PS5 file size wasn’t surprisingly small already, it’s going to be even smaller in EU and Germany. File sizes in those regions come in at 30.9GB and 24.8GB, respectively.

There is any number of potential explanations for the difference in file size between the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Techland may simply have focused entirely on the PS5 version of the game, prioritizing its efficiency, and so spent little time optimizing the Xbox Series X. Similarly,Dying Light 2may use thePS5’s SSD technologycreatively so it can load compressed files much faster, whereas the Xbox Series X will need those files to be uncompressed. Alternatively, the PS5 may not support the visual fidelity the Xbox Series X does, so it doesn’t need as kind of high-quality assets the Xbox does.

Those are just examples of what could explain the difference in file size forDying Light 2. Game development is a complicated process, to say the least, and things often come out different from expected. At the very least, it’s safe to assume thatTechland’s developers aren’t doing this with malice. It’s just the way things worked out.

Regardless,Xbox playerswho are planning to pick upDying Light 2are going to want to set aside some additional time to download the game. They may have to shift around or delete some other games to make room forDying Light 2, too. PS5 players should have a much simpler time.

Dying Light 2releases June 15, 2025 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
