From the addition of motion controls, to more recently VR,Resident Evil 4has seen numerous ports and re-releases over the years. A group of fans has dedicated themselves to givingResident Evil 4a proper HD makeover, and after many years, the project has finally received a trailer and release date.

MostResident Evilfans will agree that theofficial HD version ofResident Evil 4is not as great as it can be. While the title outputs in 1080p, and the game for the most part plays the same, many of the game’s individual components weren’t improved that well. It has been the mission of modder Albert Marin and some others to give the game the remastering it should have originally gotten, starting theResident Evil 4 HD Projectback in 2014. Eight years later and it seems like the mod is officially ready for release.

Marin has released the official final trailer forResident Evil 4 HD Project, and the results speak for themselves. In the 5-minute trailer, Marin calls attention to the variety of improvements their mod makes for the game. Some of these updates include HD remasters of “every single texture” in the game and UI, enhanced lighting effects, and “thousands of 3D model revisions.” The mod will be available for download from the mainResident Evil 4 HD Projectwebsite on February 2.

Not only does the mod improve the campaign, but also the litany of bonus content featured inResident Evil 4as well. Both side campaigns starring Ada Wong—Assignment Ada and Separate Ways—as well as The Mercenaries horde mode have received a full share of improvements themselves. Notably, the Ada stories andThe Mercenaries were missing fromResident Evil 4 VRwhen it launched this past fall, but Capcom has since confirmed the latter game mode is coming sometime in 2022.

For those who have been following the project all these years, and for Marin and their team of modders, it is going to be an exciting day when the mod officially releases. It says a lot about theResident Evil 4fanbase who, out of their adoration for the game, have gone to such painstaking lengths in remastering the game themselves.

Like any other mod, they can’t make money off of theHD Project, and yet, for the amount of work put into this, there are many that would gladly pay for something like this. With speculation of aResident Evil 4 Remakein the works, one has to wonder where theHD Projectwill ultimately fall if that title actually releases.

Resident Evil 4is available on GameCube, Oculus Quest 2, PC, PS2, PS3, PS4, Wii, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
