Stranger Thingshas finally returned for its fourth season after a series of pandemic-related delays, but it appears actor Finn Wolfhard already knows what the Duffer Brothers have in store beyond the Netflix original series.
Stranger Thingshasn’t just been a bit of a hit for Netflix, it’s become an actual factual cultural phenomenon with fans from every walk of life anxiously awaiting the further adventures of those kids from Hawkins and their adventures battling the Upside Down with their psychic friend Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). With Netflix taking a beating in recent weeks, it’s no wonder they want to keep the Duffer Brothers' gravy train going.

It’s their good fortune then that the two brothers who created the homage to everything Stephen King, Amblin, and the 1980s have a spinoff for the series in mind. It turns out series lead Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, the leader of the group and boyfriend of Eleven, guessed what the premise oftheStranger Thingsspinoffwould be. “We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about … but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it. We think everyone—including Netflix—will be surprised when they hear the concept because it’s very, very different,” the Duffers toldVarietyvia email. “But somehow Finn Wolfhard—who is one crazy smart kid—correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”
What the spinoff is about is anybody’s guess. It could be aMork & Mindy-style sitcom about Mike and Eleven’s wacky marriage after the series proper is over. Or it could involve the other number audiences were introduced to when Eleven ran away during season 2 - a sort ofStranger Thingstake on theX-Men. Finn Wolfhard’s fought many things, including Demogorgons and Mindflayers, but his most dangerous battle to date might be the incessant questions of fans who want to knowwhat’s in store forStranger Things.
Whatever happens, one thing is certain, however. This isn’t the end ofStanger Thingssince there’s at least one more season in the works (currently billed as the ‘final’ season) as well as the promise of a new spinoff - the word on it coming directly from the Duffer brothers themselves.
It’s been years of following the adventures of an intrepid band of kids and their increasing circle of found family as they battled the monsters—and government forces—stemming from Eleven’s psychic breach into an alternatehellscape known as the Upside Down. But if the next season really is the last, then fans are going to clamor for what comes next, and digging into the spinoff will be the next great hunt.
