Horror games undoubtedly become that extra bit terrifying when the immersion is bumped up through virtual reality technology. With the likes ofResident Evil 4VR being very well-received, as well as the VR version ofRE7kicking things up a notch, there is evidently a market for people donning headsets and entering a much more believable and frightening world. With that, there is another virtual reality mode which will be coming toResident Evil 2 Remakeat some point. This one is being made by the fan base, and some new footage has just been shown off.
In a clip uploaded to the YouTube channel UploadVR, a modder known as Praydog has been working on a VR mod forResident Evil 2, with it possibly being released soon. The video lasts just under 12 minutes, and is an impressive demonstration of the remake’s game from a first-person, virtual reality perspective. Although the footage appears to be a little jittery, the description assures viewers that this is down to the capture software, not the game itself, and the actual mod runs a lot better than what is shown in the video.

The demonstration shows the opening moments of the game, withResident Evilfavorite Leon Kennedytaking control. What’s interesting is that, although designed with VR in-mind, it does switch perspectives. There are a couple of moments during play, such as when Leon gets bitten, where the camera switches back to a third-person view. Generally, it has all the accouterments of a good VR mod, keeping the essence of the game entirely intact while adding that extra immersive step. And it’s all fan-made too, which is equally impressive.
Not only is Praydog hard at work on this mod, but they’re also makinga VR version ofResident Evil 3 Remake. Some brief footage from was uploaded a couple of months ago, which showed virtual reality examples from both games. WhileResident Evil 3is more prone to action, it will be interesting to see how the terror is amplified in the much scarierResident Evil 2when the mod drops.
There’s an argument to be had thathorror games likeOutlastorSilent Hillcould make the leap to virtual reality. With theResident Evilseries being given the treatment, and the gaming world currently in something of a golden age of horror, now is as good a time as any for studios and modders to start frightening the pants off players with new and immersive ways of entering these worlds.
Resident Evil 2 Remakeis now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
