ACall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2player has captured a funny clip in which they prove that the franchise’s “oldest rule” of questionable timing still applies in the next-gen release. While eachCall of Dutystudio provides its own twist on the franchise formula, some features and systems have made the jump from one game to another and this classic rule is among those inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Reddit user RA199815 recently posted a clip of theirCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2multiplayer experiences in which the player tries to aim around a corner just to get shot and killed as they look away as part of what’s being dubbed “CODtiming.” Timing-related deaths have long been a staple of the franchise and according to RA199815 and manyCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2fans responding to their post, this hasn’t changed in the Infinity Ward title. Veterans of theCall of Dutyfranchise may have experiencedCODtiming in theBlack Opsgames,Advanced Warfare,Ghosts, and theoriginalModern Warfaretitles.

RA199815’s video begins with the player aiming down the sights of their gun onCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s core mapFarm 18 as they move slowly around a corner to see an enemy throw a flashbang toward them. After seeing this explosion, RA199815 mounted a nearby corner and pointed their gun right at where the flashbang came from, and waited for the soldier to reveal themselves. Staying stationary for several moments, another grenade is thrown close to RA199815 but just far enough away for the player to avoid damage, but they couldn’t avoid the deadly consequences of looking away.

Just as RA199815 looks away after the grenade explosion, they’re shot and killed from the direction that they were previously staring at, showing thatCODtiming is the franchise’s oldest rule. In many cases,Call of Dutyplayers can also experienceCODtiming by spawning in front of enemies or by choosing the wrong path on a traditional three-lane map just to wait for respawn moments later. While this aspect ofCall of Dutyhasn’t changed in the latest release, players can currently exact revenge on the enemies that kill them by exploiting aCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2ping bug.

Although manyCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2players are critical of RA199815’s gameplay, with some calling it camping, others have suggested that the changes to perks like Dead Silence encourage the slower gameplay over running and gunning. One fan noted thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2Ground Waris particularly guilty ofCODtiming like in RA199815’s video, while others expressed their own experiences with the franchise’s oldest rule.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
