Grand Theft Auto 6’s Wild Tone Means a Recurring Joke Would Fit Right In

A studio renowned for its open-world sandboxes, Rockstar has always packed its games full of Easter eggs and secrets, many of which have earned a somewhat legendary status in the gaming community. From the surprisingly surreal and horrifying heart located insideGTA 4’s Statue of Happiness, to the UFO that lights upRed Dead Redemption 2’s night sky, Rockstar has a penchant for weird and wacky Easter eggs, and it’s practically guaranteed thatGrand Theft Auto 6will feature a mountain of its own.

A sequel potentially a decade in the making,Grand Theft Auto 6is finally confirmed, and it’ll be here before fans know it. WhileGrand Theft Auto 6’s first trailer has teased a bit more of a dramatic, more personal story than some of its predecessors, the series' usual satirical, tongue-in-cheek tone seems well and truly intact, and that could pave the way for the return of one of the most infamous recurring jokes in Rockstar Games history.

The Sasquatch Should Make His Return in Grand Theft Auto 6

A Brief History of Rockstar’s Sasquatch Easter Egg

One of the longest-running jokes in Rockstar’s repertoire, sightings of a Sasquatch were first reported in a Rockstar game all the way back in 2004 with the release ofGrand Theft Auto: San Andreas. A rumor that spread around playgrounds, water-coolers, and early internet forum boards,GTA: San Andreaswas said to be home to at least one hulking Bigfoot, often spotted roaming around the game’s many forested areas like Back O' Beyond and Shady Cabin, as well as the iconic Mount Chiliad. Officially, there are noSasquatches inGTA: San Andreas, though that hasn’t stopped fans claiming to have seen one even 20 years later.

Rockstar fans would eventually be given their long-awaited confrontation with Bigfoot, though it would take quite a few years. InRed Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare expansion, players can access a side quest called “Birth of the Conservation Movement,” where a hunter will task them with tracking and killing a handful of Sasquatches that live in the Tall Trees area. After killing a few, players will enter a cutscene in which the final Sasquatch desperately pleads for the player to kill them so that they can join the rest of their kind. It’s one of the most harrowing missions in Rockstar Games history, and an incredible twist of irony on the developer’s part.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare’s Bigfoot questline rewards players with a trophy/achievement titled “Six Years in the Making,” referencing the six years betweenSan AndreasandRed Dead Redemption’s release.

Bigfoot returns inGrand Theft Auto5, with the game embracing the mythical creature more so than any Rockstar title before it. In the main mission “Predator,” players can briefly spot the thermal image of a Sasquatch in the lower right corner of the screen while using their sniper, but that’s far from the onlyBigfoot Easter egg inGTA 5. The main Sasquatch reference occurs in the mission “The Last One,” where players take control of Franklin as they chase a Sasquatch on foot, eventually revealing it to simply be a man in a suit.GTA Onlineeven got in on the joke, allowing players to track and even become Bigfoot themselves.

The Sasquatch Would Make Even More Sense in GTA 6

The Sasquatch is one of the most iconic recurring gags in gaming, and it has the potential to be better than ever inGrand Theft Auto 6. ThoughGTA 6could have a fairly emotional main story, it seems as though its side content and general world will still contain that irreverent sense of humor thattheGTAseriesis known for, maybe even more so than ever before if the announcement trailer is anything to go by.
