Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Stays True to the Series’ Quirky Humor

Indiana Jones and the Great Circlemay remind fans of theUnchartedseries and even ofTomb Raider. The fantastic graphics, world design, puzzle solving, and combat clearly show the team’s dedication. As things seem right now, it may have the components to become one of thebest Indiana Jones games of all time, as long as the final product puts them together properly.

One aspect among the many seems to have hit the mark spectacularly well. Harrison Ford’s depiction of Indiana Jones always came with quirky situational humor, a bit nihilistic at times, but quite apt at bringing levity to a scene. From the gameplay trailer and the showcase reveal, it is quite apparent that the developers have not only created Ford’s visual likeness, the iconic smirk pops to mind, but have also written dialogues and coded in movement that stay true to his depiction. These and the combat skills are but a few points that may be the deciding factor in the debate ofwhether Indiana Jones or Lara Croftis the better archaeologist character.

Several examples come to mind here, likeIndy’s interaction with Ginain the first trailer. It starts with them talking about the enemies, where Indy says he’s had a run in with the guys and “it ain’t a walk in the park.” When Gina says, “Okay, then let’s see if you can keep up,” his response of, “If I can- What do you mean if I can keep up?” is simple but brilliant, and wouldn’t look out of place if it was Harrison Ford himself saying it. Then there’s another instance towards the end of that gameplay trailer that further proves it. When the Nazi guard gets startled and drops an antique vase, Indy’s exasperated, “You have any idea how old that was?” is just sublime dialogue writing and voice acting.

Moreover,Indiana Jones and the Great Circlehasn’t limited its quirky situational humor to just Indy or Gina. In the Official Showcase Reveal from Xbox Games Showcase 2024, fans saw one character, who may be playing a bigger part, show his anger and desperation in an amusing manner. When Indy is being held at gunpoint upon the frozen battleship, Gantz’s monologue becomes quite bizarre. At one point, he even starts dancing and making train noises. This kind of offbeat humor may seem a bit off to those who don’t remember the movies’ finer points, but it falls perfectly well-within the series’ established tone. AfterIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destinylost Disney $130 million, this is the kind of writing that the franchise needs.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s Combat and Visuals Perfectly Suit Indy’s Adventures

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’saccurate depiction of Indy’s adventures goes beyond the writing and voice acting. The game makes great use of his iconic whip; not only can players use it in combat, but they can also put it to use to distract enemies, use it in traversal, and a whole lot more. They will also have the choice between facing soldiers head-on or sneaking around them. Essentially, they will have complete agency in defining their own Indiana Jones adventure. This aspect may help them learn more about the iconic character, perhaps with Easter Eggs forimpressive things Indy did before the movie adventures came along.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circlehas a linear story, and yet the semi-open world hides a lot of trinkets that fans will have to really explore to find. Staying true to the series, puzzle solving is going to be a big part of players’ adventure. They will have to put their wits to use and get past obstacles in a manner quite similar to what they may remember from Harrison Ford’s movies. The game will also span several gorgeous locations, with the official Xbox page saying, “from the halls of Marshall College to the heart of the Vatican, the pyramids of Egypt, the sunken temples of Sukhothai, and beyond.” And, of course, the Himalayas are present as well. MachineGames has a shot at making one of thebest looking video games ever madeif it can fully realize all these places.

The Xbox page also mentions, “anything could potentially hide the next piece of the mystery – or snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” This particular quip, taken directly fromIndiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,is another point that shows the developers' passion in portraying the series’ established deadly adventures and humor inIndiana Jones and the Great Circle.
