Well known IRLstreamer Jakenbake was caught offering disheartening insight into his conversation withTwitchPresident Dan Clancy. Jakenbake frequently streams his travels and other in-real-life escapades onTwitch, but was filmed off stream while at TwitchCon, the streaming platform’s biannual convention.Owned my Amazon,Twitch has been mired in controversyever since it announced changes to how revenue would be split between the company and some of the most popular streamers on the platform. Previously, and until June 1 next year, larger streamers were offered exclusive, negotiated contracts that often provided a revenue split of 70/30 in favor of the streamer. Under the new terms, all 70/30 contracts would be void after earnings of $100,000 had been accumulated, replaced with a 50/50 split which is the norm for the majority of partnered streamers on Twitch. Sentiment towards this alteration has been overwhelmingly negative from Twitch streamers, which prompted Jakenbake to bring up the issue when given an opportunity.RELATED:Security Guard Describes TwitchCon Attendees as ‘Verbally Abusive’Referencing his recent meeting with Twitch’s President, Jakenbake can be seen uncharacteristically dejected, opening with an affirmation that he has nothing against the man himself. Despite this, he goes on to claim a lack of confidence in Dan Clancy’s vision, determining him to be “out of touch with whatthe (Twitch) streamers need and want”, concluding with the fact he felt “depressed” coming away from the conversation.
In what now feels like ancient history,Twitch was being celebrated less than a monthago for implementing strict policies on gambling, effectively banning the practice from the platform. Releasing its revenue split intentions squandered the good will garnered in prior days, triggering widespread online discourse about the differences between Twitch and YouTube, the latter seemingly coming out on top in the court of public opinion. Twitch has lost many high-value streamers in recent months due to exclusive contracts from YouTube, attracting talent from the likes of Ludwig, Myth, LilyPichu, and Sykkuno.
TwitchCon was similarly embroiled in negative publicity, following several injuries that occurred in a foam pit at the convention. What happened tostreamer Adriana Chechik was the most severe, breaking her back in 2 places after jumping into the pit and requiring surgery. Between this and recent conflict among streamers regarding sexual assault allegations, controversy surrounding Twitch does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
