Summary
Kickstreamer Girit was assaulted while on a trip to Thailand, marking the latest in a growing number of content creators who have experienced violence while live streaming. IRL creators sometimes fall victim to minor criminals, likeTwitch streamer Jinnytty’s recent encounter with pickpockets. They make easy targets due to the inherent distractions that come with interacting with viewers, carrying a camera, and in many cases, navigating in public.
There have been a variety ofshocking moments caught live on stream, and unfortunately, among these are incidents of IRL streamers being met with outright violence. Some people just seem to become immediately hostile at the presence of streamers or the possibility of being caught on camera. Content creators have been followed for hours, taunted, and even physically assaulted. Such was the case with South Korean Kick streamer Girit, who traveled to Thailand with Ice Poseidon and a few others.

Thevideo of the incident has been shared on YouTubeand other social media sites but may be considered graphic by some readers. Girit was walking along a beach in Bangkok when a stranger in an orange shirt expressed concern about being filmed without consent. The Kick streamer reassured him that he hadn’t been recorded, but the man cursed and gestured for Girit to leave. After cursing back, the content creator walked away.
Then the stranger called Girit back, who obliged, and the two ended up standing face to face in a confrontational manner. Suddenly, a second man dressed in blue punched theKick streamerin the face. Girit turned away and removed his glasses seconds before the man in orange followed up with a second punch. The content creator’s nose began bleeding, and he seemed uncertain how to proceed. A fellow streamer approached and ushered him away, telling him that continuing the altercation wasn’t worth it.
Thepolice were called, who brought Girit and the two men who assaulted him to the station. The streamer turned off his camera when ordered to by authorities but continued recording audio. From what was overheard, it seems that the local men were released with no consequences, but Thai police apparently planned to fine Girit for filming in public. As for long-term effects, the content creator was back to streaming and seemingly in good spirits the next day.
Most would not consider live streaming onTwitchorKickto be a dangerous occupation, but recent events have shown that people’s reactions to getting recorded without permission must be considered when filming in public. Generally, people don’t seem too bothered or will ask nicely for the content creator to aim their camera elsewhere. However, others respond with hostility, though it’s to be hoped that such reactions will be few and far between.
