Edgar Wright’s first movie sinceBaby Driveris definitely a beast of its own. TheLast Night in Sohotrailer paints an eerie picture of just howhorrific1960s London can be, even if the movie’s plot remains as mysterious as in previous teasers and first look images.

Like countless other films,Last Night in Sohowas originally planned for release in late 2020. However, the film’s producers ought to be rejoiced by the extra boost the movie will get thanks to Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance inNetflix’sThe Queen’s Gambit, which absolutely conquered streaming charts all over the world and helped spark a chess craze for gamers after premiering on the streamer last October. That is not to say she’s the only recognizable name tied toLast Night in Soho, which also stars Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Matt Smith, and Jessie Mei Li (Shadow and Bone), and the film is also the late Diana Rigg’s last on-screen appearance.

TheLast Night in Sohotrailer focuses on McKenzie’s Eloise, the film’s main character, who’s an aspiring fashion designer and admirer of vintage music icon Sandy (played by Taylor-Joy), to whom she suddenly finds herself developing a strange connection that allows her to travel back in time, despite things clearly not being as rosy as they look from the first glance. The tone for the film is perfectly set by Taylor-Joy’s own cover of Petula Clark’s “Downtown,” and fans of Wright’sScott Pilgrim vs. the Worldare sure to find similarities between the colorful shots used here and the ones sometimes seen in the comic book adaptation.

This early look promises to make the best out of the fashionable Soho district in order to immerse viewers in a world of dancing and partying, which is suddenly disrupted by some rather murderous threats. The psychological horror film will undoubtedly make use of clever easter eggs, as is shown with a callback toJames Bond’sThunderballbeing the movie to watch back in 1965 when Eloise first finds herself in this new world.

One thing is for sure though, aside from guaranteed plot twists,Last Night in Sohorepresents a stark departure in setting for Wright, whose previous dabbling into the horror genre offered a much lighter take when he started working onShaun of the Deadandthe rest of theCornetto Trilogy. Judging from these two minutes in the trailer, there are no laughs to be had in this neon-lighted London.

Last Night in Soho’s trailer has dropped at the perfect time. Anya Taylor-Joy’sSNLgig this past weekend provided some much-needed freshness to the show’s season finale, which had mostly struggle with low ratings that probably belong in the horror genre.

Last Night in Sohois scheduled for a premiere on June 23, 2025.
