September was a strong month for video games, with several of its biggest releases going down a treat with both critics and general audiences. Nintendo re-releasedSuper Mario 64, Sunshine, andGalaxyto the delight of its biggest fans, Vicarious Visions unleashed its remake of the first twoTony Hawk Pro Skatergames, and Paradox Interactive brought strategy veterans the long-awaited third iteration of its popularCrusader Kingseries.
However, according to NPD’s sales data, the biggest moneymaker of September was actuallyMarvel’s Avengers, beating out the competition for the number one slot. The lofty position is a glint of good news forCrystal Dynamics, who announced today that it’s looking to revamp the multiplayer game with a more engaging slate of post-game content following recent reports of its dwindling player base.

Taking second place in the charts isSuper Mario 3D All-Stars.It is worth noting that the majority of the Nintendo published entries on the list don’t take digital sales data into account, withAll-Starsactually having the second-strongest Switch launch of the yearbehindAnimal Crossing: New Horizons.Third goes toMadden NFL 21,fourth goes toTony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2,and fifth goes toNBA 2K21.
No doubtTony Hawk’shigh placement on the list is a good sign for the team over at Vicarious Visions, showing that the iconic skating franchise can still hang with some of the biggest names of today. If it continues to sell, it seems likely the franchise could follow in the footsteps of theCrash Bandicoot N.SaneTrilogyand spawn a new entry in the franchise.
Landing in sixth wasCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, which continues to sell extraordinarily well despite the upcoming release ofBlack Ops Cold War,whileCrusader Kings 3snags seventh. Unsurprisingly,Animal Crossing: New Horizonretains its place on the chart - clocking in at eighth - whileStar Wars Squadronssoars into ninth andMario Kart 8 Deluxetakes tenth.
Overall, it’s a strong month for Crystal Dynamics which managed to makeMarvel’s Avengersthe second best-selling superhero game in the US behindMarvel’s Spider-Man.Of course, the studio announced some major changes earlier today, revealing that theMarvel’s Avengersnext-generation ports would be delayed alongside the release of the Kate Bishop DLC. This all comes after recent reports that the game’s PC player count has been quickly dwindling, with the number of active online users frequently falling below 1,000 in recent weeks.
Marvel’s Avengersis out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
