Minecraft’ssurvival mode offers a lot to players. There are biomes and dimensions to be discovered, and various mobs to help or hinder the player’s progress on the way. There are also some fantasy RPG elements like enchantments, consumables, and even status effects that spice up the gameplay.

Status effects in particular come in a variety of flavors. Players can use them to their advantage to survive longer or to move faster and deal more damage. Alternatively, some status effects can be fatal and severely impair the player against a horde of hostile mobs. Here’s a breakdown ofevery status effect inMinecraft, and how players can get them.

Positive Status Effects

These status effects have a positive effect on the player and are generally speaking desirable effects.

Absorption

Players gain extra yellow hearts above their health bar for a limited time.

Golden Apples, Enchanted Golden Apples, and Totems of Undying

Conduit Power

Players have infinite water breathing and night vision underwater. Mining blocks while underwater is easier.

Fire Resistance

Players take no damage from fire or lava.

Enchanted Golden Apples, Totems of Undying, some versions of the Suspicious Stew (Allium), Fire Resistance arrows, and all variants of Fire Resistance potions.

Minecraft Wither

Players gain increased attack and mining speed.

Instant Health

Players gain health instantly.

Potion of Healing and all of its variants, as well as Arrows of Healing.

Invisibility

Players become invisible to mobs and other players.

Potion of Invisibility and all of its variants, as well as Arrows of Invisibility.

Jump Boost

Players gain the ability to jump higher. They also take less damage from falls.

Potion of Leaping and all of its variants, Arrows of Leaping, active beacons with the Jump Boost status effect activated, and some versions of Suspicious Stew (Cornflower).

Night Vision

Increased visibility underwater, as well as in dark areas or at night.

Potion of Night Vision and all of its variants, Arrows of Night Vision, being nearby a Conduit (underwater visibility only), and some versions of Suspicious Stew (Poppy).

Regeneration

Players will swiftly regenerate health over time, even without eating.

Potion of Regeneration and all of its variants, Arrows of Regeneration, active beacons with the Regeneration status effect activated, consuming Golden Apples, Enchanted Golden Apples or Suspicious Stew (Oxeye Daisy), Totems of Undying, or killing an enemynear an axolotl.

Resistance

Players will negate more incoming damage.

Potion of the Turtle Master and all of its variants, activate beacons with the Resistance status effect activated, consuming Enchanted Golden Apples and Arrows of the Turtle Master.

Some versions of the Suspicious Stew (Blue Orchid or Dandelion).

Slow Falling

Players will fall slower and take reduced fall damage.

Potion of Slow Falling and all of its variants, and Arrows of Slow Falling.

Speed

Players will walk at a faster pace.

Potion of Swiftness and all of its variants, Arrows of Swiftness, and activate beacons with the Speed status effect activated.

Strength

Players gain increased melee attack damage, does not affect bows.

Potion of Strength and all of its variants, Arrows of Strength, and active beacons with the Strength status effect activated.

Water Breathing

Players are able to breathe underwater and lose no bubbles on their oxygen bar.

Potion of Water Breathing and all of its variants, Arrows of Water Breaking, being near an active Conduit underwater and wearing a Turtle Shell helmet (the timer must be refreshed by swimming to the surface).

Players will float upward for several blocks.

Being hit by a shulker projectile.

Note: Health Boost status effect is technically in the game, but is currently unused.

Negative Status Effects

These status effects will typically impair or harm the player in one way or another, and therefore are somewhat undesirable or even fatal.

*Bad Omen

A neutral status effect that activates and starts a raid when the player walks into a village.

After killing a Captain, a Pillager with a banner, the player will gain this debuff.

Blindness

Players will have reduced visibility. Dealing critical damage and running becomes impossible.

Hunger

Players will get hungry faster.

Consuming bad food such as Rotten Flesh, Pufferfish, or Raw Chicken, as well as being attacked by a Husk.

Instant Damage

Instantly take magic damage that ignores armor.

Being hit by a Potion of Harming and any of its variants, as well as Arrows of Harming.

Players will mine and attack slower.

Being in the vicinity of an Elder Guardian.

Nausea

Players will feel sick and their screen will start to wildly warp.

Eating a Pufferfish.

Poison

Players will lose health over time, but this status effect won’t be fatal to them.

Potion of Poison and all of its variants, Arrows of Poison, eating a Poisonous Potato, Pufferfish, Spider Eye or Suspicious Stew (Lily of the Valley version), or being attacked by a Bee, Pufferfish, or Cave Spider.

Slowness

Players will walk at a slower pace.

Potion of Slowness and all of its variants, Potions of the Turtle Master and all of its variants, Arrows of Slowness and Arrows of the Turtle Master, and being attacked by Strays.

Weakness

Players deal less melee attack damage, does not affect bows.

Potion of Weakness and all of its variants, Arrows of Weakness, and some versions ofthe Suspicious Stew (Tulip).

Wither

Players lose damage over time while their hearts turn black.

Potion of Decay and all of its variants, Arrows of Decay, being hit by the Wither or a Wither Skeleton, being near a Wither Rose, or consuming the Wither Rose version of the Suspicious Stew.

  • The effect itself is neutral but has negative consequences when activated.

Bedrock Exclusive Status Effects

These status effects can only be found inMinecraft’sBedrock Edition and may be similar to some included in the Java Edition, or in both.

Glowing

Players will gain a glowing outline.

Spectral Arrows. Ringing a bell near certain enemies like Illagers or Witches applies the Glow on them, too.
