Over the last decade or so, DLC has become part and parcel of the fighting game world. While many fighting games will launch with a suitably impressive roster filled with franchise staples and maybe a handful of newcomers, there’s been an expectation built up over the last 10 years or so that this roster is only the beginning. Over the next few years, many expect any fighting game to receive a slew ofnew fighters thanks to DLC.Mortal Kombat 1has been no exception to this rule.

Announced months before the game even came out,Mortal Kombat 1’s first DLC Kombat Packwas set to include three franchise staples in Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda, along with three guest characters in Peacemaker, Omni-Man, and Homelander. A truly exciting first wave of DLC,Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack is already going down a treat with fans, but in the next Kombat Pack or just in the future, it should consider double-dipping here and there.

Mortal Kombat 1 Shouldn’t Be Afraid To Add Multiple DLC Fighters From One Franchise

Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack is a Good Start

Released just over a month ago,Mortal Kombat 1’s first DLC character, Omni-Man, has gone down very well with fans. Voiced by J.K. Simmons and given a wholly unique moveset directly based on the source material,Mortal Kombat 1’s Omni-Man exemplifies excellent fan service in video games, quickly becoming the new standard for fighting game crossover characters. With Omni-Man setting a great precedent, fans are now more excited than ever to get their hands on Peacemaker and Homelander.

But before players get to seeMortal Kombat 1’s Peacemaker or Homelander, they’re going to be given two fighters they’ve already seen plenty of before. Quan Chi is currently available viaMortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack, and Ermac will be dropping before Homelander in Spring 2024. While these characters are staples ofMortal Kombat, they’ve already been in the vast majority of the series, and fans have even already seen them in this game, both appearing throughout its story mode. To many fans, it feels like Ermac and Quan Chi should have been inMortal Kombat 1’s base rosterto begin with, and having them as part of the first wave of DLC makes them feel a little like filler. Which has gotten some fans thinking.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Guest Franchises Still Have So Much to Offer

In the past,Mortal Kombat’s guest fighters have usually been the primary character of that franchise, such as Jason fromFriday the 13th, Leatherface fromTexas Chain Saw Massacre, Predator, and Terminator. But forMortal Kombat 1, that isn’t the case anymore. Omni-Man is definitely one ofInvincible’smost iconic and important characters, but he isn’t the titular character, and there’s definitely a desire to see Invincible come toMortal Kombat 1as well.

The same can be said for Homelander as well. While Homelander is definitely the most iconic part ofThe Boys, he isn’t the only popular character, and he isn’t the onlyBoyscharacter that would suit the fighting game formula. The Boys' Queen Maeve, Starlight, Black Noir, Soldier Boy, and even a super-powered Billy Butcher could all make for greatMortal Kombat 1characters. In the future,Mortal Kombatshouldn’t be afraid to bring more than one character from these franchises over, just as long as it makes sense and there’s enough fan desire for it.
