After completing one of theGod of Wargames, or the newestGod of War:Ragnarok, some players might be looking for a film to continue the hype of a Spartan warrior with an act of violence. Luckily forGod of Warfans, some great movies will keep them tethered into the Norse mythology that they have enjoyed, or, provide them with the fix of gods amongst mortals in a fierce battle.

It’s hard for a movie to encapsulate the raw power and emotion captured withinGod of War, especially with games likeGod of War:Ragnarokfeaturing such character-heavy moments and action set-pieces. However, there are some great movies for fans ofGod of Warthat will keep themawaiting the nextGod of Wargame.

10Beowulf

An Old English epic poem receives the movie treatment from director Robert Zemeckis, andBeowulf(2007) experiments with CGI to bring the epic fantasy to life.Beowulffollows the titular character as he protects Denmark from the horrific monster Grendel. It’s a great movie that will get players of theGod of Wargames into the mythology of cold anddark lands writhe with monsters and beasts.

There’s also a great story inBeowulf, one shrouded in tragedy and corruption. Much like the story of Kratos, Beowulf must face his ego and weaknesses to become the hero that is needed for the story or sacrifice the kingdom he has worked to protect.

9The Northman

From Robert Eggers comes another epic historical thriller likeMacbeth.The Northman(2022) follows the story of Prince Amleth, a young boy who witnesses the murder of his father, and the capture of his mother, all at the hands of his uncle. After two decades of swearing vengeance, Amleth returns as a Viking warrior.

There’s a slow burn to the methodical revenge inThe Northman, one that sees action blend with the fantasy and horror of gore.There’s even Valkyries!The Northmanhas plenty of violence and a setting that could be familiar toGod of Warfans.

8Logan

AlthoughLogan(2017) might not feature Spartans or Vikings, it’s still a grand story about a man who has to hide his powers out of the fear of a hateful world.Logancomes from director James Mangold and brings a finale to Hugh Jackman’s role as Wolverine.Wolverine and Kratos are similar, yet different, and audiences may see their characters align if they watchLogan.

The story ofLoganis oddly reminiscent ofGod of War, as it involves the titular character forced out of hiding when the safety of an important child (who just so happens to be their child) is jeopardized. As a rageful and tired man, Wolverine fears tapping into the man he once was, much like Kratos.

7Immortals

Greek Mythology takes on a new adaption from director Tarsem Singh withImmortals(2011). In this epic fantasy film, the gods of Olympus choose a mortal man to fight a ruthless King who has lost his mind to the potential of ultimate power, that power being a weapon that could destroy reality and the gods themselves.

Fans might recognize some faces and names inImmortals, and it could bring them back to the era of theGod of Wargames where Kratos was filled with fury. This film features a great deal of gore, much like the games, with plenty of gods involved in the war.

6Gladiator

There are no gods inGladiator(2000), and Ridley Scott brings to the screen an intimate story of a former Roman general, betrayed, grieving, fighting for his right to live as a gladiator amongst slaves and fierce warriors.Gladiatoris a historical epic that may not link toGod of Wardue to the lack of gods, but it’s the story of a grieving father anda rageful warriorthat makes it so.

The film follows Maximus, a Roman general that loses his command after the death of the Emperor. At the hands of the Emperor’s corrupt son, Maximus is relegated to slavery, and forced to fight in the gladiator pits for entertainment.

5The 13th Warrior

John McTiernan bringsThe 13th Warrior(1999) to the screen, an epic tale of a man in unknown lands, fighting unknown threats. Ibn Fadlan, a Muslim emissary from Baghdad, is captured by a band of violent Vikings, rowdy and undisciplined with a penchant for all things gluttonous, like alcohol and food.

From the visionary and distinct style of Zack Snyder comes300, a film that is loosely based on the Frank Miller comic of the same name.300has been embedded into pop culture thanks to the musculature and physique of the characters and cast, as well as some of the iconic lines that are spoken in the film.

In300, King Leonidas leads 300 Spartan soldiers to fight Xerxes and the growing threat of an invading Persian army. There’s plenty of action bound to this film, and audiences might seek insight into Spartan pride, and what it takes to be a warrior like Kratos, andnever believe a game over.

3Conan The Barbarian

There’s no denying the legendary physique of a 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger. Director John Milius brings forthConan the Barbarian(1982), with the lead played by Schwarzenegger, the physique between Kratos and Conan is dangerously close. As a warrior, Conan and Kratos have much in common, including a shared childhood tragedy.

The story ofConan the Barbarianfollows the titular character as he searches for the sorcerer that sold him into slavery, starting him down the path that he is burdened with. After the genocide of his family and people, Conan will stop at nothing, much like Kratos’ quest to find Ares.

2Clash of The Titans

Clash of the Titans(1981) is a classic amongst many and director Desmond Davis brings the gods of Olympus to the big screen, with many iconic Greek Mythology characters and features debuting inClash of the Titans, a familiar feel for fans ofGod of War, just without the violence.

InClash of the Titans, Zeus’ son Perseus is tasked with completing a multitude of quests for his father, including battling the dangerous Medusa and the gigantic Kraken, all in favor of Princess Andromeda.

1Troy

Something that theGod of Wargames thrive at is turning mythology and fantasy into ultimate epics, with grand set-pieces that will have players thrilled with adrenaline sections. Wolfgang Petersen brings those emotions toTroy(2004), a grandiose epic that follows the united Greek forces as they take an assault on Troy.

Late into the Bronze Age, the Trojans and Greeks embark on a war that will see the death of thousands of soldiers, all because of Helen, Queen of Sparta, the face that launched a thousand ships. The epic tale ofTroyhas held up well and is enjoyable to many.
