Summary

In a blog post, Sony announced that it is working to make thePS VR2compatible with PCs. This is a major revelation, and it could be an important step in boosting a platform that has so much untapped potential.

Since its launch, thePS VR2has been compatible with the PS5 alone. However, some groups like Rad have been trying to make it compatible with the PC for a while. It appears this won’t be necessary so long as Sony is smart about how it goes about enabling PC compatibility.

PC VR for the PS VR2 Lowers the Bar of Entry for VR

One of the reasons why VR gaming has had a slow growth is because buying a headset can be rather expensive. This gets worse with the PS VR2 which requires consumers topurchase a PS5 first. On the other hand, PCs are relatively ubiquitous, eliminating the need to purchase any additional peripherals. Consequently, this may mean more players can jump right on the headset.

Although PCs are in many modern homes, a relatively powerful machine is needed to get the most out of a PC VR headset.

VR Versions of Existing PlayStation Exclusives Would Be Amazing

Some games that began flatscreen have been converted to VR, and the results have been amazing. This has been seen perhaps most prominently with theResident Evilfranchise, which offers VR modesin some of its titles. The VR mode forResident Evil 4 Remakeis only available on PS5. Other examples includeHellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, which features a VR mode that provides an experience that can be overwhelming at times.

If the same experience could be brought to the PlayStation exclusives, it would make for some unforgettable gaming experiences. Sony doesn’t even need to go as far as Guerrilla Games and create a whole new game.Titles likeGhost of Tsushima,God of War, andThe Last of Us Remasteredsimply getting a VR mode would be enough to make PlayStation’s headset a must-have device.

The PS VR2’s Power Can Finally Be Fully Utilized

The VR2 is a technical marvel, but very few games on the PS5 utilize it to its full power. The VR2 offers:

These are the perfect specs forplaying games likeHalf-Life: Alyxat their best. For this to be possible, PlayStation would need to let go of exclusivity and allow the device to use apps and games beyond its own library.

When the PS VR2 comes to PC, it may solve a blind spot the headset has had for a while - media. Currently, the headset isn’t able to play 3D movies, which is something weaker devices like the Quest 3 are capable of with ease. Watching movies on the PS VR2 would be a blast, in part thanks to its OLED lenses, but for some inexplicable reason, Sony hasn’t enabled this on the PS5. Yes, these headsets are primarily for gaming, but there are also media and productivity apps to consider that can turn a VR device into more thansimply aCall of the Mountainmachine. There is no official word on when the PS VR2 will make its way to PC, but sooner than later would be much appreciated.
