Summary

According to a new rumor, Nintendo might be working on a newStar Foxgame for its eventual Switch follow-up console. TheStar Foxseries stretches back to the days of the Super NES, where the first entry wowed players with cutting-edge-for-the-time polygonal graphics and blistering space-shooter gameplay. Since then, multipleStar Foxsequels have been released on various Nintendo systems, and characters like Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi have become mainstays in Nintendo’sSuper Smash Broscrossover series. However, there hasn’t been a newStar Foxgame released since 2016’sStar Fox Zerofor the Wii U, which was met with mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.

Indeed, the closest thing fans have gotten to a newStar Foxrelease in the last seven years wasStar Fox 2(the finished but ultimately unsold sequel to the originalStar Fox) as part of the Super NES Classic Edition bundle in 2017. However, many rumors have hinted that Fox and his crew of fuzzy space heroes would take flight once more. One such rumor was that Retro Studios, the developer behind the upcomingMetroid Prime 4, wasworking on a newStar Foxgame, but this was ultimately revealed to be false. Meanwhile, originalStar Foxprogrammer Dylan Cuthbert believes that Nintendo will eventually bring the series back.

He may be right, as a new rumor suggests that Nintendo is producing a newStar Foxentry for itsoften-speculated Switch follow-up console. Said rumor comes from leakerZippo, who has made some accurate predictions but does not have a perfect track record. According to their latest claim, this newStar Foxtitle will supposedly launch sometime in the next 12 months. It is being developed internally at Nintendo, a first for the series since 1997’sStar Fox 64. Zippo also says that this will be a sequel to a previousStar Foxgame rather than a reboot, and that online multiplayer will be a large part of its promotion.

While Zippo says that this allegedStar Foxgame will come to therumored Nintendo Switch 2 console, they don’t rule out the possibility of it being cross-generational with the current Switch system. Zippo also shared some potential proof of their claims, including a reference toStar Foxhidden in the source code forNintendo Switch Sportsof all things. Nintendo also filed a new trademark forStar Foxin Brazil in December, along with another, entirely new trademark in November.

None of this necessarily guarantees that a newStar Foxgame is being worked on for Nintendo’s next console, and it is worth pointing out that said console hasn’t even been officially confirmed yet. That being said, fans have been eager for a newStar Foxadventure for a long time now, and such a title would be an exciting and unexpected launch title for the next Nintendo system. For now, players will have to wait and see if Fox McCloud will finally make his long-awaited comeback in a non-Smash Brosgame within the coming year.
