Summary

A notable leaker has claimed that Team Asano, developer of hit Square Enix JRPGs likeBravely DefaultandOctopath Traveler, is working on a sequel to one of its titles. Team Asano, led by producer Tomoya Asano, is part of Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit II, with the team responsible for a number of JRPGs. Fans may know the team best as the developers ofSquare Enix’s 2D-HD games, the most notable of these games being theOctopath Travelerseries andTriangle Strategy. Before this team was formed, the series that arguably helped kickstart the team’s success could be traced toBravely Default.

The firstBravely Defaultwas originally released as a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, where it was a return to the job-basedFinal Fantasygames while implementing a unique turn-based combat system via the Brave and Default actions. The first game got a direct sequel known asBravely Secondin 2015, also released on the 3DS, along with a numbered sequel,Bravely Default 2, on Nintendo Switch in 2021. According to notable leaker Midori, Square Enix and Team Asano could be working on a sequel to the series or another past title.

In some recent tweets posted on Midori’s account, she claims that aDragon Quest 2D-HDremake andthe recently leakedOctopath Travelerportsaren’t the only games that Team Asano is currently working on. She states that there is another game in development by Team Asano that is a “sequel to a previous title,” and that it hasn’t been announced yet. She also clarifies that Team Asano isn’t developing anOctopath Traveler 3at this time, so it is unlikely to be a follow-up to last year’s game.

Team Asano is Working On a Sequel, But It’s Not Octopath Traveler 3

Based on Team Asano’s output in the last few years, it’s possible that the developer is working on a newBravelyseries JRPG. Tomoya Asano himselfteased fans about a newBravely Default-related game announcementearlier this year, stating that the developers will be revealing news about the series sometime this year. As such, most fans have speculated that Team Asano could be working on aBravely Third, following up on the plot threads set up all the way back inBravely Second, or another numbered sequel in the form ofBravely Default 3.

Another prevailing theory is a follow-up toSquare Enix’s 2022Live A Liveremake, as Midori previously did a poll asking if fans would play a newLive A Livetitle, which is something she usually asks her followers when teasing a possible new game or related content. Despite Midori’s incredibly reliable track record so far, fans should still take these claims with a grain of salt. With Summer Game Fest just around the corner, fans should wait for more official information about what sequel Team Asano is working on, if at all.
