Summary

ASkyrimplayer inexplicably runs into a Whiterun Guard on the island of Solstheim, a place far beyond Whiterun’s jurisdiction. It has been over 12 years sinceSkyrimwas released, and in the time since, it has proven to be the purest expression of what a Bethesda sandbox aspires to be. The Legendary Edition, Special Edition, and Anniversary Edition have all contributed to makingSkyrima polished experience for both Bethesda veterans and newcomers toThe Elder Scrolls. However, there is an argument to be made that the quirks of the Creation Kit as an engine greatly add toSkyrim’s charm and appeal.

Though the Creation Kit has allowedSkyrimmodsto completely transform the base game into a brand-new experience, it is also notorious for creating bizarre and chaotic situations. Given that the open world in a Bethesda sandbox lives and breathes outside the player’s influence, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility for the Dragonborn to be saved from a frost troll by a bear. The emergent gameplay inSkyrimalso makes it clear that dragons can and will land on top of an unfortunate bystander when attacking a random settlement.

However, the most recent Creation Kit incident belongs to a player named Who_Candice, who shared a screenshot of their Dragonborn coming across a Whiterun Guard on the island of Solstheim. Given that no Whiterun Guards are expected to spawn in Solstheim, which is under the jurisdiction of House Redoran, it makes this incident even more bizarre. That being said, there is a plausible explanation behind his unexpected appearance, and this logic also extends toother NPCs inSkyrim.

How Skyrim NPCs Can Accidentally End Up in the Wrong Place

When players usefast travel inSkyrim, if an NPC is in the middle of attempting to interact with them, they will actually teleport with the Dragonborn to the target destination. This can include dangerous places, or even areas well outside their daily schedule. Once finishing their interaction, the NPC will attempt to take the long way back home, and can often end up dying during the journey. It’s quite possible that Who_Candice attempted to fast travel from Whiterun to Solstheim while the guard wanted to make a comment about the player’s progress concerning the main quest.

WithStarfieldreleased, Bethesda’s full focus is ondeveloping the nextElder Scrollstitle. Though the game is rumored to take place in Hammerfell, and even potentially High Rock as well, no province of Tamriel has yet been officially confirmed for the sequel. That being said, it can be expected that NPCs will follow complex schedules inThe Elder Scrolls 6, as they most likely won’t be limited by procedurally generated instances the same wayStarfieldwas.
