Summary
Sony has released a new update for itsPlayStation 4console that users can download right now. While many have moved on to the PS5, Sony has sold over 117 millionPS4units to date. Instead of completely abandoning PS4 users, Sony has continued to release new system updates that aim to improve the experience for those who have yet to upgrade to Sony’s latest console.
Most of the time, thenew PS4 system updatesare fairly straightforward, making minor changes that are announced with vague patch notes. This is especially true ever since Sony released the PS5, as most of the company’s attention has understandably been focused on its newest system. However, the latest PS4 system update, which brings the console up to version 11.5, does make an important improvement.

The latest PS4 system update improves messages and usability “on some screens,” soPS4 gamersshould have an easier time communicating regardless of what screen they’re gaming on. Additionally, the latest PS4 system update also improves “system software performance and stability.” While the new update doesn’t add any game-changing new features or anything along those lines, it should still help improve the PS4 experience, and it will no doubt be appreciated by those still using the console.
As time goes on, it’s likely that fewer and fewer PS4 system updates will be released. However, it’s unlikely that Sony will completely abandon the console at any point in the near future. After all,Sony released a new PS3 updatenot that long ago, even though that console is nearly 18 years old at this point. With the PS4 only 11 years old, it’s quite probable that there will be plenty more updates released for it as the years go on.
Even so, fans can expect the more substantial updates to come to the PS5 instead. It’s unclear what new features Sony might have in the works for its PS5 console, but many fans are still holding out hope thatdynamic themes, like the ones available on PS4, will eventually make their debut. Sony has not announced any plans to add the fan-requested feature to the PS5, so it’s best fans don’t hold their breath.
As far as the PS5 goes, rumor has it that Sony is planning on releasing a big upgrade for the system in the relatively near future. Some reports point to aPS5 Pro console, similar to the PS4 Pro, releasing in the latter half of 2024. Nothing official to that effect has actually been announced, though, so PlayStation gamers should keep their expectations in check.
