Sonyhas unveiled a new patent for a design that may help NPCs in games to react more vividly to the actions and events around them. This is just the latest of manyproposed patents created by Sony, which is set to keep pushing technology forward with its bold ideas.

The major console manufacturers in the market are always trying to push out new technologies to get an edge against the competition, and that includes Sony, which is constantly competing with Microsoft for supremacy. The company has several creative patents that may drastically change how people play games, ranging from changing how controls work, to using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and much more. There are now also rumors that Sony is coming up withan entirely new version of the PS5, the PlayStation 5 Pro, which may be released at the end of 2024 and offer a superior experience to gamers.

The new patent, which was created bySony, describes a system that would improve NPC reactions to events happening near them. According to the patent, the system would track the physical 3D surroundings of non-playable characters in real-time, constantly checking if these characters should interact with it. The goal is to continuously determine what is going on on the surfaces around the NPC, so the detection that something has changed would occur quickly, and the NPC will have a proper, human-like response to it without delay.

While the patent is focused on extended reality (XR) games such as virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR), it’s clear that the same model could be used in similar areas, helping NPCs to react better in all kinds of games. Games that happen in the real world require more technology for interaction, as the whole world is not virtual, but the idea could also be implemented in fully virtual worlds. There arecountless cases of NPCs lacking a proper reactionin games, so this idea is most welcome to improve immersion.

Sony is full of innovative ideas these days. Recently, the company unveiled another curious project, a newPlayStation controller that could change its temperature. The patent explains that the design would let the controller change in temperature to reflect gameplay. For instance, it could get hotter or colder during specific parts of the game. Another unusual idea of the design is to use a deformable plastic that could change its shape in the player’s hands.
