Summary
Star Wars Jedi’s franchise has achieved success with its sequel and like any series whose sequel improves gameplay to be more efficiently satisfying,Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Ordermay be difficult to go back to now considering how limiting its gameplay is in comparison toStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. This is only natural, andifSurvivorwasn’t more fun to play thanFallen Orderit would’ve been a backslide in terms of the progression between both games.
Still, there’s an issue that Respawn has to contend with now in terms of how it’ll approach Cal Kestis’ Force abilities, seeing as how there are only two plausible paths they can take. Either Cal’s abilities get nerfed so that he’s not OP in the third game, or he’s buffed to make gameplay in the third game more fun than it was inSurvivor. It was already questionable howStar Wars Jedi: Survivorwould improve onFallen Order, butSurvivor’s sequelhas a truly tough challenge ahead of it.

Star Wars Jedi Should Resist Nerfing or Buffing Cal Kestis Too Much
Star Wars Jedi’s Soulslike Elements Feel Best When Players aren’t OP
Soulslikesbecome satisfying when players have successfully spec’d into their respective builds or upgraded a weapon to be incredibly powerful. However, up until the point where players may be able to fell lesser foes and even topple colossal bosses, Soulslikes are usually satisfying in how players begin their journey as a measly individual who can barely scrape by trivial fodder enemies.Fallen Orderachieved this sensation by explaining that Cal lost his connection to the Force, relying on Force Slow alone in gameplay before more abilities are gradually recollected.
Cal’s lightsaber is admittedly stronger than any starting weapon players would normally receive in a Soulslike, but that’s perhaps a perk of being a Jedi Padawan as opposed to a dreadful, insignificant figure whose goals are much more daunting in the worlds they belong to.
Cal still feels like a Padawan with a lot to learn by the end ofFallen Order, though, andSurvivorpicks up with him feeling much more in tune with his abilities. Cal’s lightsaber likely isn’t going anywhere due to the game being calledJedi, and even if he gains new lightsaber stances that still might not make him too OP based on how expertly stances were integrated intoSurvivor.
Only letting players select two swappable stances at any time was brilliant because it didn’t overwhelm them or give them too many options in combat, but was enriching for customization within preferred playstyles. That same customization will almost assuredly make its way to the third game, too, but Force abilities will need to be handled much more meticulously.
Star Wars Jedi Can’t Strip Away Any Force Powers It’s Given Cal Thus Far
Survivorfelt instantly gratifying because Cal was reintroduced with all the Force abilities he had recounted already available in gameplay, and the cherry on top was receiving the Ascension Cable grappling hook not long afterward on Coruscant. Besides the fact that bothStar Wars Jedigames have Soulslike elements, it would’ve been absurdly egregious to have Cal start from scratch with no abilities again.
This franchise is a story-driven action-adventure series after all, and as long as it follows Cal it will need to abide by what previous games have determined for their sequels. Therefore,aStar Wars Jedithreequelhas some expectations ahead of it, including Cal having each and every Force ability and piece of equipment.
Maybe his physical equipment is improved or altered, but the gameplay should only benefit from whatever changes are made. The other way this could be achieved is if Cal is no longer the playable protagonist, which could be what Respawn is aiming for withKata Akuna coming under Cal and Merrin’s wing.
Either Cal’s abilities get nerfed so that he’s not OP in the third game, or he’s buffed to make gameplay in the third game more fun than it was inSurvivor.
