Summary
AStardew Valleyplayer has pointed out a similarity between Evelyn and Alex’s winter outfits and an iconic movie. While the commonality is likely a coincidence, it’s one that’s amusing theStardew Valleycommunity quite a bit.
InStardew Valley1.6’s update, developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone added a ton of new content to the game for fans to enjoy, all for free. One smaller - but much appreciated - detail is the addition of winter clothes for Pelican Town’s inhabitants. Instead of walking through the cold months in their standard attire as they used to, each NPC now has a unique outfit to help keep them warm. Most of these are simply practical and make sense, but one fan has noticed something funny about two of them.

Reddit user slawdh pointed out that there’s a hilarious similarity between an iconic moment of the1982 filmE.T. The Extra-Terrestrialand Alex and Evelyn’s winter outfits.Alexwears a red hoodie with drawstrings for the winter, while his GrandmaEvelynis wearing a jacket and a headscarf. Slawdh compared the images to a recreation of a shot of one of the final scenes ofE.T., where protagonist Elliott rides his bike to rescue E.T. from scientific experimentation so he can get home to his people. The image actually shows Lachlan Stewart reenacting the scene with a wax model of E.T., but given that it’s a good emulation of the original, the similarity still stands.
Stardew Valley Players React to E.T. Similarity
Fellow fans have been cracking up in the comments at this particular detail. Some have wondered if it was an intentional choice on ConcernedApe’s part, though it seems unlikely. Wearing a headscarf as Evelyn does has been a pretty common choice for keeping warm, while red hoodies can probably be found at nearly any clothing store. Others have simply made jokes, like one fan who suggested thatAlex and his Grandma Evelynmay have done something similar prior to the events of the game, except with Alex rescuing Evelyn from a nursing home.
Stardew Valleyisn’t completely without references to other iconic pieces of media, but until ConcernedApe confirms one way or another, this simply stands out as a funny similarity to thelegendary Steven Spielberg sci-fi film. A tiny nod toE.T.wouldn’t be the strangest thing to appear in the game, as one ofStardew Valley’s bond substories touches on traveling the universe and discovering alien life, and crashed alien capsules can even show up on the farm.
