Stranger Things, Netflix’s mega-smash-hit, has audiences champing at the bit for every last scrap of information on the upcoming final season. The adventures of Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and poor Will (let alone Steve and Nancy and Max and the rest) have captured the hearts of audiences around the world who want to know what’s in store for their favorite characters in the pitch-perfect recreation of the 1980s in fictional Hawkins, Indiana.
Variety,in a report on a recent FYC (For Your Consideration) panel, took what the Duffer brothers had to say to moderator Patton Oswalt about the upcoming season ofStranger Thingsto heart. The brothers spoke about what audiences could expect for the fifth and final season of the main series, not least of which was a tone they were hoping to rekindle from that of the series’ very first season.

At the FYC panel, the Duffers were of course asked about their plans for the upcoming season ofStranger Things, and while they played coy in typical Hollywood fashion, they did let some information slip about the sort of direction fans could expect the final season of the main series (there’s at least one spinoffand a hoped-for stage adaptation also in the works). They spoke about how each season of the series had been its own thing, using examples such as season 3 being a big summer blockbuster monster season, season 4 being more psychologically frightening, and so on, stating that what they wanted for season 5 was to reach back to the tone of the first season (which was the most mysterious and Stephen King-like of the bunch).
The brothers went on, saying that the fifth season will reach the scope of season 4 in terms of the scale of episodes being bigger than usual (contradicting an earlier report), and that besides revealing the title of the first episode of the season, their overall pitch to the executives at Netflix had the room in tears (whether or not this was because they see the possibility of a cash cow closing out wasn’t addressed). A big issue the brothers said they were facing is giving each of the now massively sprawling cast members their own fitting send-offs to culminate their character arcs.
Shawn Levy, producer and director, further said that to the creative side,Stranger Thingswasn’t about demogorgons and mindflayers and the neon ‘80s, it was about the people inhabiting the world that’s been built, which means the focus is on solid storytelling. The brothers reiterated that they’renot going to introduce any more new characters in the final season, focusing instead on who they’ve already established so they can close everything out in a way that will leaves longtime fans of the massively successful streamer satisfied with the journey they’ve gone on. David Harbour has recently said in a GQ interview that he believes the expectation is to film the final season ofStranger Thingsduring 2023 with an eye toward airing it in 2024.
