The whole world is waiting with bated breath to see who the last character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’sFighter Pass will be. While it won’t be the end of DLC for Nintendo’s crossover fighter, with more characters confirmed for next year, many expect this next entry to be a big one, withso many rumors about who it could berunning rampant. But while all that is going on, an oldSmash Bros.mod is getting it’s own new fighter - Godzilla.
For those who don’t know,Project Mis a very popular mod forSuper Smash Bros. Brawlon the Wii, which altered the game to play more like its predecessorMeleedue toBrawlbeing perceived as “casual” as opposed to the more competitiveMelee. Development on the mod ended in 2015 so the developers could avoid a potential lawsuit from Nintendo, but this hasn’t stopped other fans to take up the helm and carry on its legacy, adding in new characters themselves. One such modder by the name of Peperoncino will soon be releasing their own custom-made Godzilla fighter. There’s even aSmash Bros.-like trailer for it.

What’s particularly impressive is how most, if not all, of Godzilla’s attacks and animations appear to be completely original, rather than simply altering an existing character to look like Godzilla. There’s no current release date for the mod but YouTuber Anothen Blue was able to demo the character and record footage. They wrote that Godzilla was a tank character similar to Bowser, but with better range thanks to projectiles and a strong jump. This could please those disappointed with the lack ofa Godzilla fighting game, especially after a rumor from earlier this year that suggested we’d see one announced at E3.
As for the official game, it’s very unlikely that Godzilla will be the fifth DLC character, though some still suspect that it could beaResident Evilcharacterdue to the recent addition of Spirits based on Capcom’s horror franchise. The Spirits are still available for those that haven’t had the chance to grab them, but they’ll be gone in a few days.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimateis also a contender forbest game of 2019at the Game Awards next month. It will be going up against other heavy-hitters likeDeath Stranding, but the last year of DLC could help it take the trophy. Even if it doesn’t end up winning, the general consensus is that the next character will be making their debut there, sincePersona 5’s Joker was announced during last year’s event. This hasn’t been officially confirmed, though, so it’s entirely possible that the next character won’t be announced until after the event during a separate Nintendo Direct or something.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimateis available now for Nintendo Switch.
