Taika Waititi’sStar Warsmovie is one of the franchise’s many projects in development. However, it sounds like the movie is still not close to completion, and Waititi explained why.

Waititi was a well-known name in indie movie circles for years, with movies likeWhat We Do in the ShadowsandHunt for the Wilderpeoplebuilding the foundation for his career as a comedic writer, director, and actor. Having directedThor: RagnarokandThor: Love and Thunder, he’s also proven himself in the realm of fantasy/sci-fi franchises. So when it was announced that he’d beworking on aStar Warsmovie, fans were understandably excited at the prospect of Waititi making his mark on another beloved franchise.

Despite his experience, Waititi hit a wall while writing the script for hisStar Warsmovie. During an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, he discussed his career and future projects. Waititi also explained why hisStar Warsscript has been giving him so much trouble. “I’ve got a really good idea for it,” he said. “It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.'”

Understandably, Waititi is struggling to add to therich lore of theStar Warsuniverse. The franchise has existed for nearly fifty years, and in that time, plenty of people have contributed to it. While this means there’s plenty of material to pull from, it also means that making a unique stamp on the franchise has become a little more difficult. There’s also the fact that theStar Warsfandom has become notorious for vocal fans who make sure they’re heard when things don’t go the way they want. Actors from both the prequel trilogy and the sequel trilogy have struggled with fan backlash following their performances. Since he’s already been involved in the franchise due to his role as an actor and director inThe Mandalorian, Waititi is likely aware of this fact.

With the script unfinished, it’s difficult to say when fans can expect to finally see what Waititi has to add to theStar Warsworld. He could create a new cast of characters to focus on and explore one of the manyplanets in theStar Warsuniversethat has yet to get much screen time. He could also follow the popular trend of digging deeper into an existing character’s story, though whose story he would choose to tell is anyone’s guess. Wherever Waititi decides to take hisStar Warsstory, fans can be sure it will be filled with his signature wit.
