The second trailer for Roland Emmerich’sMoonfallis here, and it features more moon-based destruction and conspiracy theories than a flat Earther’s Facebook post. The newLionsgatemovie is set to premiere in theatres next year and features an all-star cast that includes Halley Berry, Patrick Wilson, and Donald Sutherland.
The official synopsis fromLionsgatereads “A mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Wilson) and conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (Game of Thrones’John Bradley) believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.”

ThenewMoonfalltraileropens with Sutherland recounting the events of the famous 1969 moon landing. He tells us that Apollo 11 didn’t lose contact with Earth for two minutes like we’ve been told, but that they discovered something on the moon and they’ve kept it hidden for the last 50 years. From there the trailer delves into chaos as the impending collision of the moon causes mass flooding, rioting, and all kinds of destruction. The trailer ends with our heroes as they mount a last-ditch effort to save the world and travel inside the moon.
It’s safe to say that this looks like the most insane movie ever made, and one that could only come from the mind of Emmerich. Known for hisother disaster moviessuch asIndependence DayandThe Day After Tomorrow, Emmerich has made a name for himself as a filmmaker who loves to destroy entire cities and maybe even planets on the big screen. At a time where audiences are finally able to return to their local cinemas after nearly two years, it seems fitting that Emmerich would make his return to the disaster genre with a big-budget spectacle likeMoonfall.
Emmerich’s last foray into the disaster genre was the 2009 film2012, which saw the end of the world come to formation as predicted by the Mayan calendar. Since then he delved into some other genres with historical dramas such asStonewall,which recounted the infamous Stonewall riots in 1969, and the WWII epicMidway.Some of Emmerich’s more recent films, such as theShakespeare conspiracy filmAnonymous,have received fairly poor reviews, so it will be nice to see the director return to his roots and get back to blowing things up.
Moonfallwill premiere in theatres on February 4th, 2022.
