Marvel Studios has so much going on right now that it can be hard to keep up with all of its latest developments. On top of the television shows it has released so far for the MCU’s Phase 4, the company also continues to tease the slew of projects it has in the pipeline with strategic leaks and cryptic updates on social media. Recently, one such “reveal” has led fans to speculate on the studio’s upcomingWhat If…?animated series for Disney Plus, and the theories are just too good to not indulge.
A few days ago, Twitter user AnneComics posted a photo of what seems to be a brand newWhat If…?poster that was seen in a mall. The poster featured alternate versions of fan-favorite MCU superheroes in a group formation, as well asthe first look at Uatu the Watcher, the omniscient alien being who watches over the universe in the comics. Perhaps what is most interesting about the image is the text written at bottom of it that reads, “Guardians of the Multiverse” - such a tagline could be hinting at a massive multiverse concept that is soon to come.

Considering thatWhat If…?will be based on the comic books of the same name, we can assume that the show will explore the branched realities where the fates of the Marvel characters are different than what we are familiar with. For example, in theWhat If…?comic books, one storyline has theFantastic Four recruiting Spider-Manas a new member, while another has Loki wielding Mjolnir instead of his brother Thor. There’s even a storyline where Wolverine gets killed by The Hulk in an insane battle, and his adamantium skeleton is shown littered over the battleground. Needless to say, the possibilities are endless with a multiverse concept.
WithWandaVisionhaving played around with time-manipulating plots and upcoming titles likeLoki,Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, and evenSpider-Man: No Way Homeexpected to follow suit, it’s clear that Phase 4 is going to run with the whole multiverse concept, with no holds barred. What If…?won’t be an exception to the trend either - the trailer confirms the story will focus on an alternate universe where Peggy Carter is Captain Britain, T’Challa is Star-Lord, and Captain America is a freaking zombie.
Several MCU actors will lend their voice to the series, including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman, and eventhe late Chadwick Boseman, who will appear posthumously. It will be interesting to see whatWhat If…?brings to the table and if it will set up any of the future works to come.
What If…?is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in summer 2021.
