Splatoon 3players should be very scared, terrified even. The almost unstoppable Kraken special is set to make a long-awaited return in the game’sFresh Season update in March.

The official North American Twitter account forSplatoon 3broke the news a few days ago that players will once again be able to transform into this eight-legged beast from the deep sea to change the course of any game. The Kraken special, now renamed Kraken Royale, allows players to traverse the map and overwhelm their opponents with far-reaching spins and a one-shot kill move.

Splatoon 3’s New Kraken Special is a Double-Edged Sword

The second season ofSplatoon 3,the Chill Season, has left several memorable moments such as the fights against the Salmonids, the Big Run, two Splatfests that have shown the new face of the tricolor combat, new and returning scenarios, and more weapons. But it’s not long to go, and when February ends, the Expansion Pass won’t be the only new feature players will receive in Tintelia. The foundations of the cephalopod world have already begun to tremble, and the Kraken will be unleashed when the Fresh Season begins.

For those uninitiated intheSplatoonseries, the Kraken special is something that haunts the dreams of many players. This ability allows Inklings and Octolings to transform into giant squids or octopi, respectively, and rampage across the map. Once transformed, users with this ability are totally invincible and can move through the terrain faster than the rest. While the effect lasts, players can execute a wide-ranging spin move or save energy and unleash a powerful dash attack.

Due to its incredible destructive power and its impunity, many players complained in the original game that the ability was simply too strong, causing the developers to scrap it inSplatoon 2after criticism from fans, though it seems those issues have been fixed. The original weapon is known as one ofSplatoon’s most disruptive special weapons, so its return is being hailed by longtime fans. However, some users are wary and fear that this ability has not changed too much, meaning it would still be powerful enough to have no counters, possibly ruining the game experience to some extent.

While the Kraken special has a great impact on the battle, it has some weaknesses that can be exploited. The announcement video shows that there are some windows of vulnerability just before and after the player transforms. The speed of the Kraken also seems to have been addressed, as attacks will slow the beast down, and players will be encouraged to useSplatoon 3’s Squid Rolls and Squid Surgesto reach their target.

Splatoon 3’s Fresh Season New Features

On March 1, Splatoon 3’s Chill Season clears the way for the Fresh Season. In addition to the Kraken Royale, two new returning weapons have been announced as well: Krak-On Splat Roller and .96 Gal Deco. Also, the Fresh Season will bring to the game a new special weapon in the form ofSplatoon 3’s Super Chump, which will be accompanied by a model of N-Zap ‘89 and Clash Blaster Neo.

As if this were not enough, the Fresh Season will also see the return of a classic stage with Manta Maria as well as an unknown, new stage featured in the image shared on Twitter by the officialSplatoon 3account. It remains to be seen if other major news about the Fresh Season’s content will be revealed. What is likely, however, is that the next few days will bring more information about the new stage set to graceSplatoon 3.
