According to French publication Le Figaro, the Nintendo Switch surpassed its predecessor Wii as the best-selling console in France. The total sales of Nintendo Switch exceeded 7 million units in France, making this console the most popular across the country. The publication estimated that nearly one quarter of all French households own at least one Nintendo Switch, with the most recent buyer types being young adults and families with children.
The next-gen consoles didn’t decrease the public’s interest in Nintendo’s console, withnew exclusive games regularly coming to the Switch. The top physical Switch games sold in France in 2022 arePokemon Scarlet and Violet,Pokemon Legends: Arceus, andMario Kart 8. At fourth position isNintendo Switch Sports, which received a large ad campaign in France throughout the soccer World Cup. Gaming influencer Michou and his partner dancer Elsa Bois were the stars of the latest Nintendo Switch TV ad, targeting a younger audience with the multiplayer mode ofNintendo Switch Sports.
While the Nintendo Switch is the best-selling console in France, it only ranks five in the list of thebest-selling consoles of all timeworldwide. Sony’s PlayStation 4 takes fourth place, with Nintendo claiming third and second place respectively with the Game Boy and Nintendo DS. The best-selling console ever is the PlayStation 2, which sold over 155 million units since its original release in 2000.
With many popular new games coming to the Switch in 2023, Nintendo doesn’t seem to be ready to end the support of its handheld console. Despite growing rumors about an upgraded version of the console, the company confirmed thatno new Nintendo Switch would be available this fiscal year, which ends in March 2023. Even if Nintendo doesn’t release a new console this year, the popularity of theNintendo Switchwill not end anytime soon.
