World of Warcraftjust rolled out the Pre-Patch forWrath of the Lich King Classic, enabling players to create Death Knights and prepare to return to Northrend. Alongside the update,World of Warcraftrevealed theWrath of the Lich King ClassicUpgrades which include exclusive rewards for bothClassicandRetail.
The Northrend Heroic Upgrade forWrath of the Lich King Classiccomes with a special Level 70 character boostwhich also unlocks Expert Riding, gear, basic mounts, and starting gold for the boosted character. Additionally, this upgrade grants players Pebble the penguin minipet and the Fishspeaker’s Lucky Lure–a toy that summons a tuskarr fishing companion–for theirClassicaccount. This upgrade costs $50.

The Epic Upgrade includes all the Heroic Upgrade bonuses among several others. Players willing to pay the $80 cost will also unlock theKalu’ak Whalebone Glider previously datamined byWorld of Warcraftfans. This tuskarr-themedClassicmount also comes with aRetailcounterpart called the Tuskarr Shoreglider. In addition to these new mounts, players will add 30 days of game time to their account, meaning the mounts themselves have a total value of $15.
These upgrades follow a similar pattern to the Dark Portal PassWorld of Warcraftsold alongsideBurning Crusade Classic. This upgrade included similar character boosts, unique character customizations, and a Phase-Hunter mount for bothRetailandClassic World of Warcraft. IfWorld of Warcraft Classicvisits more old expansion packsin the future, players can probably expect similar offers to be made available.
Many players are charmed by the bonuses available through theWrath of the Lich King ClassicUpgrade packages. The glider itself, first spotted as a tuskarrflight path mount in theDragonflightalpha, will be a perfect addition to many players’ collections. The penguin and tuskarr companions–both beloved creatures fromWorld of Warcraft–are also charming additions to any arctic expedition.
However, plenty ofWorld of Warcraftfans are not happy with the pricing of these Upgrades. ConsideringWrath of the Lich King Classicis included with a player’s subscription, the high price points for these non-compulsory cosmetics and boosts seem a bit much. Additionally, players who would want to get the Tuskarr Shoreglider inRetailmust shell out $80 dollars for bonuses they may not benefit from unless they playWrath of the Lich King Classic. Perhaps if players make their opinions heard, or if the Upgrades sell poorly,World of Warcraftwill make this mount easier to acquirefor players uninterested inClassic.
