During the February 2023 Nintendo Direct, many fans ofThe Wind Waker were hopeful that the HD version currently available on the failed Wii U console would get a Switch port announcement. However, that did not come to pass. As it stands, bothThe Wind Waker HDandTwilight Princess HDremain trapped on the Wii U, and fans ofthose belovedZeldagames were left in the dark. While it was initially a departure from otherZeldatitles when it originally launched in 2003 on the GameCube,The Wind Wakerremains a fan-favorite entry, as made apparent by the fan art dedicated to the game.

On the r/Zelda subreddit, a user named Guys_Artwork drew Link aboard the King of Red Lions as they sailed across the Great Sea, using paper and art pencils to create his piece. The sea itself was just a small, three-dimensional square, which could be interpreted as a reference to the GameCube itself. With three seagulls flying alongside Link and the King of Red Lions, the two characters faced toward the left side of the paper. Guys_Artwork’s drawing paid tribute to theiconic art style that madeThe Wind Wakerstand outfrom its contemporaries at the time.
Guys_Artwork’s drawing received over 700 upvotes on r/Zelda in over a day. He stated thatThe Wind Wakerart they made is the eighth part of a series of drawings focused on isometric worlds. Guys_Artwork commented thatThe Wind Wakeris his favorite entry in theZeldaseries, citing the music, art style, and sailing were their favorite parts of the game. While the seafaring portions of the game were considered a divisive topic at the time, the Great Sea remained prominent throughout thestory ofThe Wind Waker, as Link would discover how the sea came to be throughout his journey.
The Wind Wakerwill celebrate its 20th anniversarylater this year, though it remains to be seen if and when Nintendo will formally acknowledge it outside of social media posts. WithTears of the Kingdomjust three months away, only time will tell ifThe Wind Wakerwill get any notable attention in this important year for theZeldaseries.
